bmfc1 Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2010 Posted November 21, 2010 Tweets say it's Collins. Welcome Terry! Best of luck! The bar is low after Jerry so you won't have to do a lot to impress us. Based on what we've read, I don't think that you'll try to make jokes after a loss, so already you're ahead of your predecessor.I hope that you don't quit and the players don't quit on you. And that people smarter that me are right in thinking that it's not important that you haven't managed in the majors since '99.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2010 Posted November 21, 2010 I'm chuffed , ignore the negativity from bmfc.....he's a real comedian that fella.
Ceetar Grand Central Contributor Posted November 21, 2010 Posted November 21, 2010 *yawn* can we sign a pitcher now? maybe 2 or 3?
bmfc1 Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2010 Author Posted November 21, 2010 "I'm chuffed , ignore the negativity from bmfc.....he's a real comedian that fella."No worries. He was my 4th pick out of the Final Four but he hasn't lost a game yet so he's got a clean slate with me. I hope he's the best manager they've ever had. If the Smart Three like him, then I trust their judgement.

Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2010 Posted November 21, 2010 Rubin via ESPN.comNEW YORK -- Eleven years after he last served as a major league manager, Terry Collins again holds that title. The New York Mets have selected the 61-year-old Collins as the 20th manager in franchise history, according to a team source.Collins served as the organization's minor league field coordinator this past season. He previously managed the Houston Astros from 1994 to 1996 and the then-Anaheim Angels from 1997 to 1999, compiling a 444-434 record. He emerged from a field of 10 managerial candidates, including fellow finalists Wally Backman, Chip Hale and Bob Melvin.Collins most recently managed the Orix Buffaloes in Japan in 2007 and 2008, then China's entry in the World Baseball Classic last year.He had appeared in line to succeed Jim Tracy as Los Angeles Dodgers manager five years ago, but that unraveled when Paul DePodesta was pushed out as general manager during the managerial interview process. DePodesta recently joined general manager Sandy Alderson's staff with the Mets as vice president of player development and amateur scouting."I was the minor league director and the field coordinator over there," Collins recalled last week. "I knew the young players, and they were starting to go young. So I thought I had a real good chance there. Certainly when Paul got let go, I was probably as disappointed as anybody."Collins had been one of three finalists the last time the Mets cast a wide search for a manager. Instead, Willie Randolph was hired by then-general manager Omar Minaya to lead the team into the 2005 season and beyond. Then-Texas Rangers hitting coach Rudy Jaramillo was the other finalist.DePodesta recently heaped praise on Collins, calling him an "absolute star in player development," and suggesting Collins' experience in Houston and Anaheim would be an asset in his third stint as a major league manager."I think any of us who have been in these jobs in various organizations learn a lot every step of the way," DePodesta said. "I've been through four organizations now. I'm hopeful some of the things I've been exposed to over that time will be helpful to the Mets, and I think the same could be said for Terry. He's been a major league manager a couple of different times. You learn an awful lot from that. He's been in the Far East. I think, again, he's had a lot of success in player development. So I think there are a lot of things about his experiences that are worthwhile. Everyone likes different personalities. I really like Terry's intensity. I think he's a tremendous organizational guy."and so on

metirish Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2010 Posted November 21, 2010 Heyman saying Hale will be on the Collins staff, and this interesting, Heyman says that Dave Wallace is Collins best friend and wonders if will be back as pitching coach.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted November 21, 2010 Posted November 21, 2010 I think we'll all find this one a lot more palatable if we get past the "he lost his team(s)" tag and think that he, you know, did pretty well by them before he lost them.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted November 21, 2010 Posted November 21, 2010 Jeez, he's already got a brick up his ass.Nice.
Guest metsguyinmichigan Guests Posted November 21, 2010 Posted November 21, 2010 We've assembled an All-Star front office, so I have to give the benefit of doubt. Welcome, Terry, now get this mess straightened out!
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2010 Posted November 21, 2010 I'm optimistic ... at least in the short term. His track record suggests wearing out his welcome by year 3 or so but I'm not going to pre-worry about 2013 now.
HahnSolo Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2010 Posted November 21, 2010 Welcome, Terry, and good luck. Not an easy situation to come in to. Now let's get your staff together and play some ball.

Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2010 Posted November 21, 2010 Reportedly a [u:3d7krm5v]Two-Year Deal[/u:3d7krm5v] - which means I can really put off worrying about that third year players' revolt.
Guest Rockin' Doc Guests Posted November 21, 2010 Posted November 21, 2010 I'm just glad that a decision has been made so that the management team can now concentrate on acquiring the players needed to fill some holes in the team personnel.
Guest Kong76 Guests Posted November 21, 2010 Posted November 21, 2010 .[bigpurple:3vnure8p]**yawn**[/bigpurple:3vnure8p]It was going to be him from the start, why did it take so long?I hat the Mets right now, but it's late November.
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2010 Posted November 21, 2010 For Melvin I was ready to drink the Kool-Aid. For this guy, it's Coll-Aid.And boy is it well-prepared!
Guest The Second Spitter Guests Posted November 22, 2010 Posted November 22, 2010 From a list of uninspiring candidates, he was the most inspiring. (But I'm uber-excited at Dave Wallace's candidacy as pitching coach.....are Warthen and HoJo officially boned?)
seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted November 22, 2010 Posted November 22, 2010 Okay, fellas. Now let's win some effin' games.

metirish Old-Timey Member Posted November 22, 2010 Posted November 22, 2010 A not surprisingly negative reaction in the local media about Collins, still I wonder if some of these writers are not a little worried about there own place in the order of things, they might bethinking no more laughs like we had with Jerry and Omar, change is coming.
