Morbidly watching MFY pregame to see how they honor the passings of icons. Jack Curry has already credited Steinbrenner with prodding the Red Sox to win a World Series. Girardi has been quoted as saying he's going to raise his son in Boss-like fashion. Air sickness bags are in evidence throughout households that don't normally monitor YES.

Wow, all the championship flags are on the roof (perhaps for Old Timers Day) AND they're at half-staff.

Bob Sheppard just welcomed everybody to Yankee Stadium. I guess he's OK.

Video tribute includes "he gave everybody second and third chances" and a picture of poor, abused, alcoholic Billy Martin appears.

It ends with his SNL hosting gig wherein he pokes fun at himself as a beloved American from other walks of life. Strange note to go out on.

Jeter said both Mr. Sheppard and Mr. Steinbrenner left this organization in a better place than when they arrived. Sheppard came when they had won three World Series in four years.

With the game on Channel 9, YES follows the emotional ceremonies with Mike Mussina's Yankeeography, which is appropriate. He always seemed grim as death.

Kay has mentioned repeatedly, "It's the first game the Yankees have played without George Steinbrenner at the top of their hierarchy since the end of the 1972 season."

Well, let's hope it makes a difference.

Obviously. I bet they repeatedly told people to buy a (Sponsor) scorecard too.

Not sure no PA announcements is the way to go. But the Yankees were never beyond keeping their fans confused so they could do what they wanted. Like how they refuse to wear numbers even though the average Yankee fan can probably only identify a handful of them by number.

I just got home from work and was going to post about that.

Well, that may be true about George, but when Sheppard joined the Yankees in 1951, there were 5 future Hall of Fame players on the team (Dimaggio, Berra, Rizzutto, Mantle and Mize) and a future HOF manager in Casey Stengel. In addition to the World Series you just mentioned, they were about to win 7 (or was it 8) of the next dozen fall classics.

Well, there is a sappy inspirational saying about leaving something better than when you got there. Also I'm sure it was in reference to what Sheppard added to the MFYS experience, supposing that Sheppard's predecessors weren't as great as he was.
