Guest mario25 Guests Posted June 3, 2010 Posted June 3, 2010 Joe Torre.....1978 First Mets game memory from that year was watching Dave Parker trying to bowl over Jogn Stearns and breaking his jaw in the process. I used to watch all the games on channel 9 and was hooked!
Willets Point Old-Timey Member Posted June 3, 2010 Posted June 3, 2010 I was a token Mets fan as far back as I can remember. Torre was manager when I can first remember being aware of the Mets. I started really following baseball in 1985 under Davey Johnson.
Vic Sage Old-Timey Member Posted June 3, 2010 Posted June 3, 2010 i have vague memories of the Mets in 70-71, but my most vivid early memory is seeing Matlack during his RoY season in 72, with Yogi Bear (as i called him) managing. I remember a game where Matlack took a line drive right off the coconut, and he went down on the mound as if shot, with the concussion reverberating thru the stadium with a sickening "thunk". I may be conflating that game with an earlier one. I also remember a game at Shea with my cub scout troop, and getting separated from them on the train platform. A cop took me to the security office, where my dad came and got me. It may have been before 72, though.
