Scoreless streak at 24 innings for Pelfrey.[/quote:1nykjf8f]

Any idea what the team record is?[/quote:1nykjf8f]

I'm going with Koosman, 31 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings, the stretch run for the division, 1973.

Y'know, since he seems to be struggling in the 'pen, they really ought to consider moving that Joba fellow into the rotation.

Meanwhile, on NBC, Team Tenacity and Team Sharon Osbourne are heading into high-gear in the fitness fundraiser. Will Bret Michaels' steamy moves cost Team Osbourne the win this week? Will Tenacity leader Holly Robinson-Peete outlast the ditzy but tough Cyndi Lauper?

The wife is watching this mess downstairs. I'll take stale MLB highlights, thanks.

I can see Queens from my front door, and it's rainy and thundery.[/quote:15853yxx]
Sheesh, you'd think on a night like this they'd cancel the Williamsburg Pride Parade.

Think of the poor traveling Braves, blue.

Why, Bobby Cox's jetlag is so pronounced, it has its own itinerary.

If Jerry had known the game was only going to go 5.1 innings, he'd have used four relievers in the fourth inning.

He's going to bed tonight feeling that Feliciano got cheated out of an appearance!

I'll take this win and like it!

I may be the only person around who does, but I always enjoy the Sunday night games.

The announcement in the middle of the 3rd (?) inning floored me, when the Mets invited people to move down to any open field level (excluding the Delta Club seats) or Excelsior level seat. I can certainly remember games where the ushers have turned a blind eye to upgrades when there was bad weather/extra innings but never a specific invitation.

Jayson Heyward this series: 1-9, 3 Ks and tonight a big GIDP. Nice job by the Mets pitching.

Jones looked very old on that play .[/quote:3fmy5188]

In all fairness to Larry, the bad hip had to have been more of a factor than his age. Especially on a rainy night like this.[/quote:3fmy5188]

He didn't do the Braves a favor by playing last night. He was running on the pitch that McCann drove for a double, and couldn't even try to score on the play.

Does one-pitch Valdes get credit for an appearance? Does Pelfrey get credit for a complete game? Can both credits be simultaneously possible? Marty Noble, be with me in my hour of need.

Wait, what? A baseball team actually showing a little fan appreciation rather than treating them like criminals for moving to unused seats? Craziness. They must be getting really desperate to keep fans coming to the games.

Yes & No

Had the game been called right at the end of the 5th then, yes, Pelfrey would have gotten his CG credit even for the shorter game.

I was wondering the same thing. It seems like Frayed Knot has it right; the box score on MLB.com shows Valdes in the game, with one pitch thrown, but zero batters faced.

That one pitch prevented Pelfrey from getting credited with a complete game/shutout.

I'm not sure how to enter this into the UMDB... as a five-inning game, or a six-inning game. I'm leaning towards five.

Maybe there was a rules change along the way that I missed or forgot, or maybe I never had it right, but I thought that any uncompleted innings would be dropped from the "official record" meaning that the aborted sixth inning would have been erased.

Guess not!

That only applies if there is a lead change during the top half of an inning.

(Of course, had the Braves hit a 2-run homer in the top of the 6th before the rain started, I would venture to say it would be extremely unlikely for the umpires to make it a rain-shortened 1-0 win for the Mets).

Don't kid yourself - that announcement was more to make the place look better/fuller for the ESPN telecast. Had there been no national TV audience there would have been no 'appreciation'.

I think of last night as less of a national TV audience and more as a "national" "TV" "audience."

It's passing strange in our marketplace when a product (Sunday baseball games) is delivered in a manner in which the producers (the players) don't prefer, and the consumers (the audience) don't prefer.

I guess it's the void in the marketplace. Sunday evening is traditionally programming aimed at wimmens (made-for-TV dramas of women and families overcoming odds) and families (low-rated dramatic series featuring handicapped folk, western/prarie historical settings, and/or sisters), so there's less competitition for the male viewer. But, man alive, I should have gone to bed last night.

I started like a half dozen Scrabble games during the game, figuring they'd keep me awake during the inevitable and inteminable rain delay. I started out in the lead in most of them but I trail most of them this morning.

I feel for the Braves, I tell you what.
