A62: Record 114-48 <<<

More likely 112-48 with two inconsequential rain outs
not being played

*rolleyes*

I think they're gonna suck, and I can't wait for it to begin.

"I think they're gonna suck, and I can't wait for it to begin."

I agree on both points. Even though I have very low expectations, it's baseball, it's the Mets, and I can't wait.

I think they're going to be mediocre. I won't say that I "can't wait" but I am looking forward to the return of baseball.

sounds like joel oppenheimer's preseason analysis of the 1973 season in one of the greatest of all ny mets books -- "the wrong season."

funny, when i try to imitate oppenheimer's style -- which was still unusual in 1974 -- it looks like like anything else on the internet.

toujours gai, toujours gai

Fuck it.
Why not?

His prediction is as valid as anybody else's. (Probably better than some New York sportswriters)

The season's gonna' start with a clean slate, folks.

Be positive.

Let's Go Mets!

Later

Glorious!

Oh, and can you imagine the rationalization and justification by some of the New York columnists should the line about Jeter and the PEDs come true?

"Cap'n needed the drugs just to keep up..."

"Medicinal purposes only..."

"Wanted to know what Clemens and Andy felt like so he could be a better captain and support them though tough times."

This blogger projects the Mets to fininsh under .500. Nothing new in his piece, though a few good lines.

Best and worst winters: Mets (No. 26)
February 18th, 2010, 8:56 am 2 Comments posted by Sam Miller, The Orange County Register

Its hard to believe that, as recently as September 2008, the Mets were in first place in the NL East and, with four of the 20 best players in the game, looked poised to threaten the American League in the World Series. Right now the Mets are barely replacement level at three positions, and reliant on the always reliable Oliver Perez.

So, with five positions and at least two rotation spots to upgrade, Omar Minaya had a five-part plan this offseason:

1) Sign Jason Bay. No matter the cost, no matter the years, and no matter how few other teams were at all interested in Bays bad knees and worse defense. Instead of at least feigning serious interes in Matt Holliday, and potentially driving down Bays leverage, make it very clear that the Mets must have and only want Bay otherwise his feelings might be hurt. Sign him for, admittedly, a not horrifying $66 million deal, though no steal in this economy.

2) Sign Kelvim Escobar. Its only a million bucks, so you can applaud the idea, but the over/under on Escobars innings pitched has to be 1/3, right? I dont think he got even one best shape of my life in this spring before being brought down by a shoulder injury.

3) Expand Mets philanthropic efforts by donating $2 million to the Angels for Gary Matthews, Jr., who I argue might not have received any Major League offer had he been a free agent. Gabe Gross a tremendous defender who can play all three positions and more or less matches Matthews offense signed for $750,000. So how much would Matthews a terrible defender who shouldnt play any positions and more or less matches Gross offense really get in this market?

4) Mike Jacobs. Obviously.

5) Pursue, but be rejected by, every other free agent on the market. Reach low point when Bengie Molina, long assumed to be headed to New York because nobody else will offer him as much money for two years, nonetheless rejects you and signs for less money and one year in San Francisco. Reach really lowest point when Mets fans collectively cheer the non-signing, noting that Molina had a .285 OBP and is a 35-year-old catcher and nobody in their right mind would sign him for two years. CORRECTION: As noted here, the Mets final offer to Bengie was only one year.

And thats not even to get into the Carlos Beltran-surgery saga. If weve learned anything about the Mets, Beltran should be ready to go shortly before the world ends in 2012.

Not signing Bengie Molina can make anybodys offseason a little brighter. But alas, not bright enough projections systems see the Mets as a sub-.500 team. Fred Wilpon will pay more than $120 million to field that team.

That correction was in response to my post. About time these folks start listening to my cranking.

I keep running into your cranking in the most random places. (Village Voice toss-off blog post late one night last week, e.g.-- IIRC, you held the guy up next to Nat Hentoff and found him wanting... then slammed his non-sequitur-of-a-response to the heckle.)

Don't mind me. I'm losing it. Just get clear when I finally blow.
