We might be fortunate enough to get away with this.

Jerry Manuel, exuding confidence in the options at the back of his rotation.

Sure, and I'm sure some of the players are feeling down about things, it'd be nice if the Manager could come out with some confidence instead of basically knocking his guys. Again.

If lots of things go right, the Mets could be good. It's his job to try to make those things happen. If he doesn't think he can, what he's really saying is "Please fire me, I'm not good enough to do this."

fuck it, i'll take the honesty. (most of) the players arent dumb enough to see through lies about the quality of their teammates anyway, this way maybe they'll believe Manuel when he says something that could be true, like "I've got alot of confidence that we'll have Beltran back soon"

Sure, he just seems a little defeated from muddling out from under the domino pile of last year. Another form of honesty would be a statement like

You know, guys like Nieve and Figgie did a really good job for us last year (they did) and were certainly not the reason we finished in fourth place. We'll get a real good look at them this spring and my job is finding the combination that'll give us the best chance of excelling. Omar hasn't told me if he's done yet, but I'm preparing to go forward with what I've got, and seeing Johan and Oliver throwing pain free off a mound (note the re-direction here) is really exciting. I can't wait until February 18th.

Omar:

We have a plan

Like with Jerry's quote, we all hope he is right, and only time will tell.

I brought a lot of stuff on myself with previous organizations. I didn't take the game very seriously. I was always blessed with talent. After I was drafted [in the 2003 first round], I took a lot of things for granted. Once I got traded here, it was a clean slate.

Blastings Thrilledge, talking to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that Lastings is going to Spring Training in the " best shape of his life" and that he is ready to " rededicate himself to the game".....

John Maine on knowing that the great Koufax was watching his bullpen session

"I got a little nervous when I heard he would be watching my bullpen session, and then I didn't have a good one,But needless to say, it's an extreme honor to have him around.

And then this.......

Though his informal visit lasted only about an hour, Koufax tried to do his part Monday, speaking in particular with Maine for "several minutes" about using both sides of the plate and other trade secrets, according to the Times.

He gave me a great analogy, one of the best ones I've ever heard. I'm going to try to use it when I throw again on Wednesday."

What could the analogy have been?

"We believe this year is gonna be the year we're gonna win it."

The guy also thinks the team is healthy. Well, you're down two all-star hitters at the moment, but yeah, I guess so, relatively.

"Mets fans don't have to tell me what they're feeling, because I'm one of them. As bad as it was for them, it was worse for me. And, trust me, I'm the same as them in another way: I don't want us to go through anything like that ever again."

Heath Bell - in Baseball Prospectus

"The only thing is that I'm probably one of the candidates to go to Minnesota. Kerry Wood and some of the other candidates have gone down, and I'm healthy. I want to stay here, but it would be kind of cool to go up to (Twins catcher) Joe Mauer since he's on the cover of my PlayStation, and say, 'Hey, can you sign my game?'"

You only have one guess as to who this is.

"I like our team,I think we have a good team. I think that the group as a unit feels good about itself. I think something inside these guys is going to say, 'Hey, let's bind together. Let's have a good year. I think we can prove some people wrong."

Alex Cora on the 2009 Mets:

"I always remember what Ozzie Guillen said: 'You can't win the Kentucky Derby with donkeys.' I don't want to say we were donkeys, but there was no way we were going to win the Kentucky Derby last year."

I always remember what Ozzie Guillen said about Jay Mariotti.

How great would it have been if they had won the Kentucky Derby in 2009?

A 2009 KENTUCKY DERBY WINNER banner would look great on the outfield wall at Citi Field!

If they'd entered the Derby last year, you'd currently be able to choose between Reyes All-Purpose Adhesive and Cora's Utility Mucilage at your local Home Depot.

"That's the way it isgood for him, enjoy it. I wish he could do that for mehe was a horseshit player for me. He was very bad for me."
Ozzie Guillen on Nick Swisher's success with the Yankees. (Anthony McCarron, New York Daily News)

Apparently, Ozzie likes horse analogies.

He didnt give you my 55 at-bats, that I had 55 at-bats and five hits in the big leagues, and what do I know about hitting? He didnt give you that one? Thats what he told me. Im glad he didnt give you all that one.

--- Jerry Manuel, when told of David Wright's gentle objections to being benched, touching on Hanley Ramirez's rip earlier in the week of his bush league manager Fredi Gonzalez

"It was close. He was definitely rubbing me also. It's hard to distinguish who exactly encountered or created the first rub."

Joe Maddon commenting on his run-in with umpire Bob Davidson.

Per Metsblog:

David Wright later said that the one-two punch of Santana and Pelfrey it gives the team a good chance to win at least two out of every five games.

Which is going to be good enough for last place.
