The correct spelling, noting the order of the z and r, would suggest we are pronouncing his name wrong.

Strangely it's the Z that's silent. (Pronounced YASTREMSKI) He probably should have been "YASS" instead of "YAZ"

That was long my assumption too. Only a few years ago did I realize that the YAZ nickname was not a correct shortening and that the Z went elsewhere.
