Yastrzemski.[/quote:p421v16w]

Yastrzemski is correct.

I found out today I've been leaving out the "z" my whole life.

YASTRZEMSKI

I actually taught myself the spelling when I was a kid. I think (if the above is correct) I still remember it![/quote:28eoh0sp]

This is very funny.

The correct spelling, noting the order of the z and r, would suggest we are pronouncing his name wrong.

I'll email Boston and let them know about the nickname change.

Coach K scoffs at the ridiculous easy spellingosity of "Yastrzemski".

Same here. I memorized the spelling in elementary school and never forgot it.

That was long my assumption too. Only a few years ago did I realize that the YAZ nickname was not a correct shortening and that the Z went elsewhere.

P.S. You can win almost as many bar bets by challenging fans to guess his hometown which is Bridgehampton on Long Island's south fork.
Few connect New England's hero to New York and especially not to the rural east end's immigrant Polish potato farmers. It was only a decade or so ago where Newsday had a piece about some kid breaking his HS basketball scoring records.
