Guest attgig Guests Posted December 21, 2009 Posted December 21, 2009 Strasburg got 15.1 guaranteed over 4, and he's widely considered to be a more polished pitcher.'He' - meaning Chapman - is considered more polished?
Guest LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Guests Posted December 21, 2009 Posted December 21, 2009 Oh, understood. Which is why he'll get more... I just don't think the Strasburg neighborhood is an unreasonable starting spot. The Marlins also offer proximity to Cuba, which I'm sure factored in somewhat to what they put forth-- and what they didn't-- in their bid.I'm guessing he eventually ends up getting something like 4/20 or 5/24.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted January 7, 2010 Posted January 7, 2010 Latest buzz is that the Mets, Yankees, and Astros are OUT of the picture for Aroldis Chapman, and that the Red Sox and Angels are still in the running.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted January 7, 2010 Posted January 7, 2010 Did Peter Gammons say whether Siberia is still in the picture?
ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted January 7, 2010 Posted January 7, 2010 Chapman now hits 190MPH on the gun and has developed 4 more pitches in the last week
Valadius Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2010 Posted January 10, 2010 Chapman has signed with an unnamed NL team for $30 million.
Guest Swan Swan H Guests Posted January 10, 2010 Posted January 10, 2010 He will, apparently, name the team for an extra $10 million.
Guest Kong76 Guests Posted January 10, 2010 Posted January 10, 2010 Signed and will be traded to Mets rumors?
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted January 10, 2010 Posted January 10, 2010 Reports --- seemingly emanating from Yahoo's Jeff F. Passan --- say it's the Reds.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted January 11, 2010 Posted January 11, 2010 Reds snag him with a 5 year deal plus an option for a sixth, the package said to be in the $25-$30 million (and almost certainly back-loaded) range. This will probably kick-start rumors of trades for pitchers Arroyo and/or Harang -- and possibly 2Bman Phillips.

I could see a Niese-Castillo for Harang-Phillips dealio.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted January 11, 2010 Posted January 11, 2010 I suspect money could torpedo something like that as those guys are owed ridiculous amounts of money for not just this coming season but next year as well.I realize that's part of what makes the deals possible but, at the same time, somewhat prohibitive.Harang: $12.5mil in 2010; + a $2mil buyout or $12.75 in 2011Phillips: $6.75 in 2010; $11 in 2011; + $1mil buyout or $12mil option in 2012, an option which becomes mutual if he's tradedand just for kicks, Arroyo: $11mil this year plus a $2mil buyout or an option for $11 more nextSo that's getting rid of Castillo's 6 + 6 (plus Niese's min wage) in exchange for taking on around $20mil just for this year alone and then having to again find a 2B & a mid-range pitcher.Phillips has some pop in his bat and is a better fielder than Castillo at this point but barely gets his OBP above .325
Vic Sage Old-Timey Member Posted January 11, 2010 Posted January 11, 2010 i'd do that deal in a heartbeat.
Guest LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Guests Posted January 11, 2010 Posted January 11, 2010 It's a trade you could make, and seems smart on its face-- OBP aside, Phillips provides positive-to-very-positive value in every other aspect of the game (plus-power for the position, plus-plus running and defense) and is smack in the middle of what should be his power prime.... but if you're Omar, and you're considering/discussing a trade, you have to take into heavy consideration that THIS is your splashiest move until 2012. Once you make this trade-- which, if it's Harang/Phillips-Castillo/Niese or something like that, will mean your taking on at least 20-22 million in salary over the next two years-- next year's offseason is a virtual no-go zone. Next year's season, that is... in which at least a few of Beckett, Webb, Cain, De La Rosa, Kuroda, Lee and Vazquez are going to be available.
Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted January 11, 2010 Posted January 11, 2010 Hey if you guys need Cincy to kick in more $$ to make this happen I'm all for it.
Vic Sage Old-Timey Member Posted January 11, 2010 Posted January 11, 2010 The Mets competitive advantage is (or at least should be) their unmatched revenue streams (at least in the NL). The notion that this move won't be made because of $$ is infuriating.
Guest attgig Guests Posted January 11, 2010 Posted January 11, 2010 The Reds have already declined a harang deal with the dodgers that would've cleared their payroll (i think they got sherrill back). I can't see them accepting something with the mets where they take on castillo's contract.
Guest LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Guests Posted January 11, 2010 Posted January 11, 2010 It's hard for me to believe that Oakland and Toronto weren't offering comparable-- if not equivalent-- deals.Maybe he's just more comfortable in red?

ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted January 11, 2010 Posted January 11, 2010 Are the Mets going to sign an SP or..are they going to wait for Pelf,Ollie & Maine to fall on their asses..I'm pissed
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted January 12, 2010 Posted January 12, 2010 I guess this is the pissed thread.

metsmarathon Old-Timey Member Posted January 12, 2010 Posted January 12, 2010 i advocate the FK plan above. piniero can match or approximate what you'd get out of harang, at a much lower cost. he also won't cost you any players. i'd much rather prefer to trade castillo for a painful one-year obligation than a painful multi-year obligation. in fact, if the choice is between hamstrining ourselves with luis castillo for the remainder of his contract, or trading him for a more odious two-year contract, wherein the return on investment is the same or worse, i'd rather just keep luis castillo. i think that overpaying for harang and phillips qualifies as worse ROI than castillo. more upside, sure, but its more likely we'd see what those two have provided in their most recent seasons.

I just won't buy it if the Mets end up saying that they can't afford those guys.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted January 12, 2010 Posted January 12, 2010 Not having the money to pull it off and not wanting to spend said money because it's deemed a dumb deal are two different things.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted January 12, 2010 Posted January 12, 2010 Like the Mets are going to say that.
