Fman99 Old-Timey Member Posted September 8, 2009 Posted September 8, 2009 I am stumped. Happy with my own contributions though.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted September 8, 2009 Author Posted September 8, 2009 Not Minoso. The guy we're looking for was involved in a quirky "record" on this date in 1965
Valadius Old-Timey Member Posted September 8, 2009 Posted September 8, 2009 I said Kirby Puckett for Twins hits upthread.

stevejrogers Old-Timey Member Posted September 8, 2009 Posted September 8, 2009 And I'll say Eddie Collins for A's hits
Valadius Old-Timey Member Posted September 8, 2009 Posted September 8, 2009 Luke Appling for White Sox hits.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted September 8, 2009 Author Posted September 8, 2009 I said Kirby Puckett for Twins hits upthread.[/quote:2om5l9tl]And it was wrong then too.Appling is the White Sox guyAparicio is not the mystery LatinEddie Collins is wrongSo we're looking for a Latin in the A's org whose career started past mid-century and was not only active on this date 44 years ago but did something memorable (though a bit odd) on the field that day.Oh yeah, and he played a long time and got a lot of hits, mostly, although not exclusively, for the A's.

Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted September 8, 2009 Author Posted September 8, 2009 btw, the "odd" circumstance that occurred 44 years ago today was Campaneris playing all 9 positions in one game.Seeing that note prompted me to look up the game.- it was a late-season (obviously) meaningless-for-both teams game vs the Angels and Charlie Finley did like a good stunt every now and then- Campy started at his usual SS then went to 2B & 3B (switching with Ed Charles) then made the rounds of the OF, then 1B, then P, then C- he made one error in the game, as a RF- pitching the 8th inning of a game the A's were losing by one, he gave up one run- catching in the 9th he was run into by an Angel player (a pissed off one maybe?) on the last out of the inning and knocked out of the game- A's scored twice in their half of the 9th to tie it (so they would have won it had Campy not given up the 8th inning run)- game wound up going 13 inning (with the A's losing) but Campy, having been knocked out of the game, wasn't around to play his 10th, 11th, 12th & 13th positions
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted September 8, 2009 Posted September 8, 2009 I think somebody (perhaps a minor leaguer) has managed to play ten positions, under the theory that DH is a position.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted September 8, 2009 Author Posted September 8, 2009 btw, looks like the next closest to taking over a team hit mark are:* Vernon Wells with the Jays and Ichiro in Seattle - both are in the 200-250 hits away range* Wright is some 450 behind Eddie Krane* Hanley Ramirez needs around 500 for Castillo's Florida markExpect a little less fanfare when/if those happen.
