MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted August 11, 2009 Posted August 11, 2009 Nah, At least he's a "name" player with major league experience.Takes more than that to piss me off.B'sides, Buffalo has a large Polish- American population. They'd probably build a statue to him.Later
nymr83 Old-Timey Member Posted August 11, 2009 Posted August 11, 2009 grudzielanek has been an average player the last few years, would have been nice to have around when jose went down but not of much use now to a team better off testing out some young guys.
smg58 Old-Timey Member Posted August 12, 2009 Posted August 12, 2009 The Brewers DFA'd Bill Hall, demoted J. J. Hardy, and fired their pitching coach. Heads are rolling in Milwaukee.

Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted August 12, 2009 Posted August 12, 2009 Chris Bosio takes over as Milwaukee pitching coach. He attended the same high school, and played under the same high school coach, as Jerry Manuel.PS, I'd like Bill Hall were he willing to accept a utility role. I'm talking for next year's Lou Collier thread, mainly.
A Boy Named Seo Old-Timey Member Posted August 12, 2009 Posted August 12, 2009 Yah, I've long thought Bill Hall could be useful. He plays a bunch of positions (even a little 2B back in the day, as I recall). I'd totally take a shot on him.

(Aside from the walk-off a few years ago... a .316/.380/.783 career rate line-- with 2 HRs and 3 2Bs in 5 games on Mama's Day.)Like most utility men, though: as a fielder, he's one hell of a hitter.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted August 12, 2009 Posted August 12, 2009 Can we get Dale Bozzio as a pitching coach?
Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted August 12, 2009 Posted August 12, 2009 Life is so strange.
smg58 Old-Timey Member Posted August 12, 2009 Posted August 12, 2009 Hall's defensive rep suffered from a bad first impression, but he was an above-average middle infielder by the time the Brewers moved him to center and eventually to third.Outside of this year he's always hit lefties well, and at least had some pop against righties. I see no reason why he couldn't be a solid utility man/platoon second baseman for a good team.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted August 12, 2009 Posted August 12, 2009 Hall's defense is more a case of 'jack of all trades, master of none'. IOW, he's good enough to play a variety of spots while not really being top-notch at any of them - but just the fact that he can handle both SS & CF puts his value on 'D' much better than the usual run of the mill utility guy who mostly stick to corner spots. And because of that, I'm not sure how you don't find room for a guy like that on your team. He's been DFA'd - rather than just flat-out released - so I expect someone will deal for him before the 10 days are up.Hardy being demoted is a surprise - although I haven't been following his season too closely and the guy they brought up to replace him is a highly touted prospect.
Guest Rockin' Doc Guests Posted August 12, 2009 Posted August 12, 2009 Edgy - "Can we get Dale Bozzio as a pitching coach?"Seems to be an appropriate choice since we already have a bunch of Bozos pitching for us.
Guest LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Guests Posted August 13, 2009 Posted August 13, 2009 If these reportsare true, it's a little depressing. If true, and it's because Jerry likes him, then... well... I don't know how to feel, really. Mild despair? Tempered bitterness?
ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted August 13, 2009 Posted August 13, 2009 After one big hitting year Hall just stopped hitting. He has been hampered by nagging injuries and thus might fit in.
Farmer Ted Old-Timey Member Posted August 17, 2009 Posted August 17, 2009 BALTIMORE (AP) -- The Detroit Tigers bolstered their offense for a pennant drive by obtaining first baseman Aubrey Huff from the Baltimore Orioles for a minor leaguer."I've been in last place basically my whole career, so this is an exciting time for me," Huff said. "I'm looking forward to it."The Tigers began Monday leading the Chicago White Sox by 2 1/2 games in the AL Central. The last-place Orioles obtained pitcher Brett Jacobson from Detroit and assigned the right-hander to Class A Frederick.Huff is batting .253 with 13 homers and 72 RBIs. The 32-year-old Huff recently hit his 200th career homer and should fit in nicely in a Detroit lineup that ranks 11th in the AL in runs and seventh in home runs.Still, with the non-waiver trading deadline passed and little talk of a deal, Huff expected to finish the season in Baltimore. When he was summoned to manager Dave Trembley's office Monday afternoon, Huff figured it was for a pep talk. Then Huff saw Orioles president Andy MacPhail sitting with the skipper and suspected something was up."I didn't really expect anything," Huff said. "I cleared waivers and there wasn't a lot of interest I'd heard of. So this one kind of hit me out of left field."Huff said he was sad to leave an Orioles team finally reaping the benefits of rebuilding through youth."This is probably the best young talent I've been around and I've been around some young talent. ... You got an All-Star in Adam Jones, and a superstar in Nick Markakis that nobody knows about," he said. "(Brian) Matusz, (Chris) Tillman, all these young guys coming up. It's a very exciting time here and Baltimore should have a lot to look forward to."Huff spoke briefly with Detroit manager Jim Leyland by telephone Monday and said he expects to join the Tigers on Tuesday, when they open a three-game home series against Seattle.Jacobson was 1-3 with six saves and a 3.74 ERA in 35 games with Class A Lakeland this season. The Orioles didn't immediately replace Huff on their 25-man roster and were prepared to play a man short against the Los Angeles Angels on Monday.

Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted August 20, 2009 Posted August 20, 2009 Dodgers pick up Vicente Padilla (late of the stRangers) to help soothe their current pitching woes.Kuroda finally went on the DL yesterday 4 days after taking a liner off his noggin, and while their phenom Calyton Kershaw didn't lose yesterday he was yanked in the 4th inning already having throw 97 pitches (and walking 4)Bill Hall gets traded to Seattle although I'm not sure why. I hope for their sake Milwaukee is paying them a bunch of money.
bmfc1 Old-Timey Member Posted August 21, 2009 Posted August 21, 2009 Boston released Chris Duncan. I know he's not very good but neither are the current players. Would it be the worst thing for the Mets to sign him, play him for a month, and see if he could help in '10?

I could actually see him on a contending team coming of the bench , obviously that didn't work in Boston either.

Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted August 21, 2009 Posted August 21, 2009 Problem with Duncan (aside from the fact that he's a meathead) is that he's the left-handed hitting brother and therefore wouldn't make a very good Murphy platoon.Could be a consideration for a bench/part-timer role in 2010 but that's hardly a problem we need to start solving now.
