bmfc1 Old-Timey Member Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 (edited) He sux and he will be injured soon... welcome back Anderson Hernandez!Traded for minor leaguer Greg Veloz.Either Luis is hurt worse than they though and/or Cora's thumb is worse. Edited August 6, 2009 by Guest
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 Great glove , someone post his great catch .
Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 With Castillo out they felt they needed another guy whose hits rarely leave the infield. Don't know much about Veloz but I predict this deal won't hurt the Nats.
Vic Sage Old-Timey Member Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 wow, a guy with a career OPS+ of 60. Yes, that's much better than moving Murphy back to his natural position to see what he can do over the rest of this meaningless season.
smg58 Old-Timey Member Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 He's a more experienced version of Argenis. Eh.
smg58 Old-Timey Member Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 Veloz has a .600 OPS in high A. The good news is that the Mets have one less featherweight middle infielder in their system.
Vic Sage Old-Timey Member Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 no, they just moved him to the major league roster.

Yes, that's much better than moving Murphy back to his natural position to see what he can do over the rest of this meaningless season.Isn't Murphy's natural position third base?It was the position he played most frequently in the minors (although "natural" is probably overstating it a bit-- he was a below-average-at-best fielder by most metrics).I mean, hell, if the players are on board, why NOT go apeshit with the experimenting? I don't know that you're getting David over to SS ever, but why not move Murph to second, and bring up Davis (or Thole?) a bit earlier than planned to fill in at 1B? (And if they're not on board... well, isn't his supposed rapport with them counted among Manuel's strengths as a manager?)

I know that we don't expect that, but the nebulous "Mets fan base" expects to "win every year" or they're going to "go to the movies" instead of coming to the ballpark.I say go for it, though. Seriously. Cut anyone who's not a realistic puzzle piece for next year (Livan, Sheffield, Schneider, Tatis, Dessens, et al) and go young. Bring 'em up and let 'em fuckin' play.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 Well, there's no point cutting them when they're dealable. As for moving hitters to more challenging positions, I mean it as much for the purpose of being more aggressive this year as seeing what guys can do for the future.I'm not talking about going young so much as going offensive.
metsmarathon Old-Timey Member Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 if fernando tatis can get some playing time at second base, then surely daniel murphy can get some playing time at second base.
Valadius Old-Timey Member Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 I would have moved Murphy to second and Tatis to first. Andy Hernandy, in my opinion, should merely displace Berroa.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 Met fans seem to have an awful lot of confidence in Murphy's ability to play 2nd base - a position that he's played almost none of (a handful of minor league & AFL games) and those who have seen him play almost universally think he's ill-suited for.I think it's clear that if Castillo is out for any length of time you'll see Tatis at 2nd and Murphy at 1st as opposed to the other way around. Or now that AndyHandy is in the mix it becomes even less likely. The only possible scenario where I see them trying Muffy at the keystone is if/when Delgado returns full time and even then it's unlikely.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 I have quite the scarcity of confidence. I just think the SHaMmies are in a position where some longshot maneuvers are in order.
metsmarathon Old-Timey Member Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 its far mor of a professional curiosity than a confidence. i'd like to see what he can do there since, if he can play passably, then it opens up a bunch of options for the team. most notably, it gives him a place to play if delgado ever comes back and isn't immediately traded away.
RealityChuck Old-Timey Member Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 The team saw what Murphy could do at 2B in the ASL last winter. Presumably, they didn't like what they saw, since there hasn't been any mention of trying it again.

It also makes him more interesting trade fodder-- his bat plays a lot better, as they say, at the keystone.I'd characterize my curiosity as approximately 60% morbid. After five or six weeks of Val Pascucci tearing the cover off the ball in Buffalo, Jerry confessed when interviewed he had no idea who the guy was.Sometimes we need to lobby for the team to reconsider.
