Why is this game being played tonight?
They are going against over 100 years of tradition.
The baseball opener every year is supposed to be in Cincinnati.
I guess they aren't a national tv draw.

I think they've started w/ just 1 game the last coupla years, no? Do they let the champs play the first game now, then everyone else the next day or something?

'Cause I could get behind that. It's a neat, odd thing and stretches Opening Day into 2 days.

It isn't always the champs... but the season has started on Sunday night for several years now.

The Sunday night debut exists to feed ESPN's Sunday night package - although the Cincy 1st game tradition died years earlier than that.
The first game has been on Sunday night for many years now while the trend of having the defending champ host the game is slightly newer than that.

Coupla hits and a walk and the Braves have turned a 4-0 lead into 4-1 and the tying run is at bat in the rather large form of Ryan Howard ... 1 out.

I watched the first 4-5 innings.

Funny how things change from a few years ago. I enjoyed watching the Phillies get smacked around, even if it was Atlanta doing the smizzacking.

Speaking of John McSherry, which I was, I'm thinking that Moises Alou was the last active player who was in the lineup on the day McSherry died.
