Met Trivia Question (#2)

Recommended Posts

Posted

These are the only four Met pitchers to have accomplished this feat in their MLB (not necessarily Met) careers:

Warren Spahn, Dean Chance, Dwight Gooden and Tom Glavine.

[u:j3ab8pkq]Hint #1[/u:j3ab8pkq]. It's a positive accomplishment; something each pitcher should be proud of.

[u:j3ab8pkq]Hint #2[/u:j3ab8pkq]. The answer to this question can be confirmed very easily, in any reasonably comprehensive baseball database. The answer to this question is not some obscure feat like least triples given up on a Thursday in June or something of that nature.

[u:1m9pz8fv]Hint #3[/u:1m9pz8fv]. The answer is a pitching feat.

They didn't all win the triple crown. I'm trying to work out what Dean Chance did that Saberhagen (not on this list) didn't.

My first thought was that they each pitched a no hitter, but that obviously isn't what you're looking for since Seaver would have definitely been on that list.

Everything that I can think of off the top of my head (Wins leader for season, no hitter, Cy Young Winners, etc...) for that group, Seaver accomplished as well. I'm stumped.

Kevin Appier and Hideo Nomo, among a few other one-time Mets, threw one-hitters as rookies. Nomo also started the '95 All Star Game during his, ahem, "rookie" if you wanna call it that, year.

In his rookie season, Jae Seo was the starting pitcher for the Mets in a combined one-hitter against the Marlins. Met pitchers faced the minimum 27 batters in that game.

The following pitchers - Warren Spahn, Dean Chance, Dwight Gooden and Tom Glavine - are the only one-time Mets to have been the starting pitcher in more than one All-Star Game.

Extra credit for you.

We have a winner! (And seawolf's gonna kill me, but fair is fair. What would Alex Trebek have done?)

The following pitchers - Warren Spahn, Dean Chance, Dwight Gooden and Tom Glavine - are the only one-time Mets to have been the starting pitcher in two All-Star Games.

Spahn ('58 and '61)
Chance ('64 and '67)
Gooden ('86 and '88)
Glavine ('91 and '92)

Good job.
