Yank Me

Trying to keep up with the Mets lousy week from two time zones over was a challenge, but the Yankee spoogefest was inescapable.

A couple of lowlights:

  • Stumbling on an NPR report by Word Freak author, and real talent, Stefan Fatsis. Stefan reports on the history of the stadium as a continuious buiding, because that's the party line, and apparently NPR is toeing it, so Fatsis has to also. He continues, under quesioning from the anchor, by listing his favorite moments there, explicity pointing out that his first game in 1969 was at the "original" stadium, and that he was at the Reggie Jackson three homer game at the "new" stadium (but only saw one, because his family had to beat the traffic).

Asked about the stadium going up, he describes the faade as neo-gothic, based on the (again) "original" stadium. He was describing two different parks but still forced to inisist that they were a single entity going back to 1923.

Last question from the anchor. "Stefan, Shea Stadium is closing this year also, but nobody's talking about that."

"Yeah, well, that's because nobody's going to miss Shea."

    Hey, Stef, I'm somebody.

  • Looking desperately for Mets scores, I got into my B&B one night and twiddled through their satellite television to find ESPN, only to discover them broadcasting a Yankee game, what I guess was final game, based on footage they showed of Yogi on the field in uniform (looking admittedly smart in his woolies). I didn't make it long. As Jeter came up to bat, they informed be that Bob Shepherd hasn't been able to make many (any?) games this year, but that Derek Jeter had him record an introduction of him so he could have that... that... voice continue to speak his gilded name.

So, a barf cleanup had to be added to my B&B bill. Mostly objective wife next to me on the sofa asks, "Isn't this guy supposed to be Mr. Team."

    "That's Captain Intagibles to you."

"But he didn't ask the announcer to record the other players' names?"

    "Apparently not."

    "And folks buy this act?"

    "Apparently so."

    "He looks like a jerk."

  • We return to honeymooning, but my airplaine reading is a New Yorker issue, which includes a two-page spread cartoon of the great moments in Yankee Stadium, but, of course, the latter day Yankees are depicted in a setting with the architectural features of the original buiding --- pillars supporting the overhang, 400 million feet to left center, the works. Among the "great moments" depicted is Jeffrey Maier stealing a homer for the Yankees in 1998.

  • Coming home to read here that they had stand-ins show up for deceased Yankeeas is just the diarrhea icing on the shitcake. Who would buy that tasteless nonsense? Thanks for coming all this way, Bobby Richardson, but even if you couldn't, we would've just dressed some fat guy up like you and it all would've been jake.

Apparently, these people aren't allowed to die, because they're no longer people but corporate properties.
Anyhow, here's hoping the Mets, um, don't pull that shit. The only guy I want playing a character is Mr. Met.

Two posts, both very different -- and both brilliant!

I had the same trouble when I was in Hawaii last month, the only way to get scores was to either watch the scroll on ESPN in the hotel room, or wait until the morning paper the next day.

I was wondering, does SportsPhone or anything like it still exist? I had a working cell phone in my pocket; I would have been happy to dial a number to get an update like I used to do 20 years ago.

I just called that number (212) and got a recording saying it can only be accessed by Verizon users in this area.

To answer the question, I think there must be millions of ways to get scores today with all the gambling addicts out there.

Google SMS!

Send a text message that says "Mets score" to 46645 (GOOGL) and you'll get the current day's and previous day's score. No charge other than receiving one text message.

There are so many electronic ways for gamblers ... I mean fans to get their sports fix these days that I can't believe there would still be a staff of living, breathing people giving out scores and such like Sports Phone once did.

Howie Rose was one of a bunch of current day media types who got his start being one of the Sports Phone voices.

I get scores from my BlackBerry.

Isn't every cellphone web-enabled these days? Just go to any one of a bazillion sites and grab your score.

I have no idea how to do that.

You can create and maintain a virtual universe of Mets history and interactive statistics on the internet and you can't figure out how to use a basic function of your cellphone?

Slacker.

Yeah, isn't that something? When it comes to cell phones I'm like somebody who was born in 1905. I can only assume that cell phone technology just hasn't intrigued me enough for me to focus on it at all. Kind of like my late grandmother who, years ago, when given a microwave oven as a gift ended up using it as a spare kitchen cabinet.

I love that. Thanks.
