Not that Ayala will do that, but we got him for a AAAA infielder we don't need, he's had success in the past, we badly need a bullpen arm and we definitely have a spot we can spare. I don't see what the problem is. Omar is likely still looking for something higher impact, but I like that he's importing potential solutions in the absence of definite ones, at minimal cost.

Ayala was very good before this year although there are plenty of warning signs that he isnt what he used to be.
he missed all of 2006 (i think he was the one guy who sufferd a serious injury in the WBC) and since then has only gotten 63% of his pitches in for strikes (67% the previous two years) and has seen an even bigger dropoff in first pitch strikes, only 56% of his first pitches to a hitter are strikes.
his whip has been climbing, and its been via the walk as he has walked 3.4 per 9 this year, after 2.5 last year and a very good 1.6 in his prior 2 years. he's allowed about a steady hit per inning his whole career.

its a good move by omar, but we'll have to see if ayala can reverse these disturbing trends.

Yeah he was - and maybe his diminished numbers are partically the result of the first year back comedown that pitchers returning from major surgery often have.
Best-case scenario is that he helps out this year before really bouncing back next season meaning that we got a useful pitcher on the cheap from an organization that wasn't patient enough to wait him out.
