Charlie Samuels, finally getting the message that two-tone black is full-blown whack, has been dressing the Mets in the blue hats all week. Mostly (all?) snow-whites also. Will this glorious hattery continue on the road in Cincinnati?

I was wondering that, too. Maybe he's made some kind of correlation between the blue caps and the winning streak.

I would guess that this was the first time we've seen blue caps six games in a row since 1997.

Seeing blue caps in Cincinnati on Thursday would be wonderful.

The Boston Celtics won the NBA championship in 1986. The New York Mets wore blue caps without an orange dot in 1986 and won the World Series.

Logic dictates that, since the Celtics are once again champions, if the Mets drop the orange dot, they will win the World Series this year.

I'm not a fan of the orange dot myself, but I'll take it if that means we can see blue socks the rest of the year.

The orange dot's the least of my peeves after 11 years of those hideous black things the Mets have been wearing. By the way, does anyone here have some connection to MLB to find out if the Mets will be wearing new unis for their inaugural season in Citi Field? Are they ditching the black? The MLB deadline for submitting next year's uniform changes past a few weeks ago. The league discourages teams from disclosing uniform changes for as long as is reasonably possible on the theory that more fans than not will stop buying uniforms styles that are soon to be discontinued.

(Me, I would do the opposite. I'd be more inclined to buy a uni about to be discontinued if I didn't already own the style).

There have been rumors of a uniform change for 2009, but I don't know if they have any basis in fact at all.

And if there is a new uniform, I'm not at all convinced that it will be a change for the better. I'd like to see a return to blue caps and white pinstriped uniforms but they could very well go in a completely different direction.

It's possible, for example, that starting next year, the Mets will be wearing pink and green. Beware of what you wish for.

And don't the Pirates sometimes wear bright red jerseys with a big pirate face on the front? And look at those Colorado uniforms with the girlie shoulders.

A new uniform won't necessarily be an improvement. It may very well be a major turn for the worse.

At least the socks are the right color.

My guess is that there might be some tinkering -- maybe a new alt or something -- but that they'll keep the basic look in tact. The only dramatic change was purged after two distasteful years. The tail. Shudder.

Posted

A dramatic change would involve: new colors other than blue, black, or orange; replacing the traditional NY insignia with the little curlicues; replacing the traditional Mets script with block letters. Stuff like that.

I wouldn't call the tail dramatic. I'd just call it ugly.

The tail was blasphemy. Never bought one thing that had that on it.

But as Casey indicates here it was part of the original design for the uni.
Those might be striped sox too. YEEK!

They were striped sox. The original Mets uniform design called for blue stirrup socks with orange stripes. The striped stirrups never made it past the prototype stage.

That's a handsome stadium concept behind him.

I also want blue hats on Wright and Wagner at the Salute to Yankee Cathedral Game.

I remain convinces there are uni changes on tap for next season and I wouldn't mind seeing them do something goofy like introduce striped sox.

If they give us striped stirrup sox, they can go back and forward at the same time.

Does anybody ever wear stirrups any longer?

Some Cardinals try it. They also wear striped sox.

Some try it? As in some don't? Non-uniform uniforms? That's anarchy.

I like baseball stirrups. Even better when they're striped. I'd like to see orange striped blue Met stirrups next year. (I'm betting on a major Met uni change for next year also).

Yo Charlie Samuels: that's horizontal orange striped stirrups I'm talking about. Nothing funny.

If the Mets go to blue stirrups with orange stripes, I'll let them continue to use the black jerseys (but only as an alternate on the road).

That only seems fair. However, if Ollie Perez isn't on the team next year, who on the team would be wearing their pants high enough to see the socks? David Wright seems to have some sort of pants leg-related schizophrenia and I don't know if anyone else wears em the right way.

Damn it, Charlie. This season might be on your head.
