Yes its an ominous name, and National Grid connected to a cheerful word like Park will make an odd name.

National Grid Park........horrible , not that Keyspan was a winner either , but this is what happens with utility company's and banks , Capital One has bought North Fork bank and maybe one day they will buy Citi.

Do they still own Shoreham?

This is one of the things about corporate naming that bugs me, beyond the hideousness of some of the names. (3Com Park? Yeesh.) There's no stability in the park's name. (I keep forgetting, for example, that Bank One Ballpark is now Chase Field. Nor do I remember the current name of Pacific Bell Park.)

I know old-style ballpark names have changed in the past. (Tiger Stadium had at least two previous names, and Shibe Park and Sportsman's Park were both renamed.) But at least those name changes were a lot less frequent. Now stadium names are too transient. I think it has to affect the way they're thought of and how they'll be remembered.

It's so prosaic that I like it. Like Standard Oil or Consolidated Lint. Was hoping it was a reference to one of my favorite bands. alas not.

My thinking is that the onus is on fans to come up with generic or nick names for their new stadiums and hope they stick.

Thunderbolt Park works for me.

I've toyed with the idea of referring to these stadiums in the UMDB by their mailing addresses. For example, instead of calling it Pacific Bell Park or AT&T Park, I'd call the Giants' home stadium "24 Willie Mays Plaza, San Francisco"

(I just looked that up; I doubt that all the stadiums have addresses that are that good!)

Long after Qualcomm bought the naming rights to the Padres old stadium people still call it Jack Murphy Stadium or " the murph" , of course he was long associated with that facility and it was named in his honor after the died.

Anaheim Angels - That's right, I typed Anaheim, because I'm not buying that LAA crap. The address says it clear as day. If it's good enough for the US Postal Service, then it's good enough for me.

Angel Stadium of Anaheim
2000 Gene Autry Way
Anaheim, CA. 92806

Does this mean the big ass sign next to DiamondVision will be changed? Hard to believe something at Shea will be changed so soon before its demise though.

Not sure if the radio promotion is still going on (IIRC it was the home town home run inning), but "If a Met player hits the National Grid sign caller wins X amount of dollars..." doesn't resonate the same way as "If a Met player hits the Key Span sign..."
