Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted October 11, 2007 Posted October 11, 2007 The bigger news is that Jon Schuerlholz looks to be stepping down.So says Ken Rosenthal:http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/7322496
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted October 11, 2007 Posted October 11, 2007 That's big news, there will be teams beating down his door to hire him.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted October 11, 2007 Posted October 11, 2007 That makes sense of why they broke so decisively with Andruw Jones, rather than have a protracted negotiation unlikely to go anywhere. This way Wren doesn't have to start his wreign as the guy who lost Jones.
TransMonk Old-Timey Member Posted October 11, 2007 Posted October 11, 2007 Frank Wren DOB: 3/17/1958Hometown: St. Petersburg, Fla.College: St. Petersburg (Fla.) JCAssistant Director, Scouting - Montreal Expos 1987-1990Assistant General Manager - Florida Marlins 1993-1995VP / Assistant General Manager - Florida Marlins 1996-1998General Manager - Baltimore Orioles - 1999From Wikipedia: When Pat Gillick resigned as GM of the Orioles at the close of the 1998 season, Wren was recruited as his replacement. But the 1999 Orioles were a major disappointment. The club finished six games under .500 despite one of the highest payrolls in the game and the signing of free agent slugger Albert Belle to the most lucrative contract in baseball at the time. During the season, Wren was criticized publicly by Baltimore owner Peter Angelos and his family, and when the season ended, Wren was fired after less than a full year on the job.VP / Assistant General Manager - Atlanta Braves - 2000-2007
Vic Sage Old-Timey Member Posted October 11, 2007 Posted October 11, 2007 Here's a nightmare: the MFYs fire Cashman and hire Schuerholz.
TransMonk Old-Timey Member Posted October 11, 2007 Posted October 11, 2007 I suppose if Schuerholz were to leave Atlanta it would make it even easier for Glavine to return to the Braves if he wanted to. No more dancing around that alledged rift between the two.
Valadius Old-Timey Member Posted October 11, 2007 Posted October 11, 2007 Holy crap! What's the deal here, with Schuerholz, Jocketty, and Terry Ryan all stepping down at once?
Valadius Old-Timey Member Posted October 11, 2007 Posted October 11, 2007 Except they're all very-long-tenured executives. I just think that's a little odd. GMs who've been with clubs 5 or 6 years is one thing. But three GMs with a decade-plus for their teams all going at the same time I find a bit strange.

Guest sharpie Guests Posted October 19, 2007 Posted October 19, 2007 Trey Hillman, currently manager of those crazy Ham Fighters of Nippon to be named manager of those crazy City Royals of Kansas.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted October 19, 2007 Posted October 19, 2007 That leaves two possible managing destinations for Joe Torre: St. Louis and Pittsburgh.I can't imagine he'd go to Pittsburgh.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted October 19, 2007 Posted October 19, 2007 My prediction: Vice President and Super Designated Personnel Development Guy for Baltimore.
TransMonk Old-Timey Member Posted October 19, 2007 Posted October 19, 2007 Trey Hillman's Fighters just knocked Bobby V's Marines out of the Japanese playoffs. His team won the Japanese championship series in 2006 with Tsuyoshi "Mr. Sparkle" Shinjo on the roster. Hillman had announced in September that he was leaving Nippon at the end of the season in order to spend more time with his family. Hopefully he brings his family to KC.
Valadius Old-Timey Member Posted October 22, 2007 Posted October 22, 2007 Tony La Russa is staying in St. Louis.

(Japanese teams are named after the owners instead of cities. Think Anehiser-Busch Cardinals, the Tribune Cubs or Senile Egomaniac Yankees.)
Guest Rockin' Doc Guests Posted October 22, 2007 Posted October 22, 2007 Metsguy - "...Anehiser-Busch Cardinals, the Tribune Cubs or Senile Egomaniac Yankees."Thanks for the laugh. I'm glad I wasn't drinking anything when I read that or I may have choked.
Valadius Old-Timey Member Posted October 30, 2007 Posted October 30, 2007 Torre's headed to the Dodgers.

Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted October 30, 2007 Posted October 30, 2007 (edited) I don't remember what kind of manager Tony Pea was for the Royals, only that he had a great first season before crashing and burning.Do you think he's up for the Pirate job? He sounds kind of oafish (though clearly a baseball lifer) in his conference call here after the Yankee interview.First question: Bryan Hoch.http://yankees.lohudblogs.com/2007/10/24/pena-yanks-can-win-next-season/ Edited October 30, 2007 by Guest

Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted October 30, 2007 Posted October 30, 2007 They cite the Journal-News, who also say Mattingly is jumping with Torre, as the root source. Wow.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted October 30, 2007 Posted October 30, 2007 What is he, crazy? Isn't he concerned about his Yankee legacy? Why is he agreeing to manage the Toledo Mud Hens?
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted October 30, 2007 Posted October 30, 2007 That really puts the lie behind Hank's bluff, doesn't it? Is he going to play that card with Pettitte, Posada, etc. --- implying that they have a lesser claim to a plaque insignia, and maybe won't be welcome back for Oldtimey Day or some shit. (Agent)Hey, Hank, you don't know anything about anything and had only a passing interest in this business until recently. You've accomplished nothing in the field yet, so I'd invite you to worry about your own damn legacy as the guy who ruined the Yankees. Put your money on the table or get stuffed.(/Agent)
Valadius Old-Timey Member Posted October 30, 2007 Posted October 30, 2007 What shocks me more than anything is that Mattingly would leave the Yankees. The only reason I can see for him joining the Dodgers is that his son is currently in their farm system.
