Nut Crunching Time

From the end of Thursday's IGT:

KC: "I'm just not all that pissed off for some reason. Everyone can feel the way they want and rant and rave but the truth of the matter is it's coming down to what everyone thought the East would be ... a dog fight between NY, Atl, and Phil ... strap 'em on and get ready for tomorrow nigh' is what I think.

30 games in the balance."

and

JD: "The trick is to think of them as the '07 Mets and not the '27 Yankees."

I agree.

The ease of the '06 campaign spoiled some Met fans into thinking that a race that even is in doubt is somehow akin to crushing failure.
We've held the lead virtually every day for the entire season to the point where even after a week from hell we've still got a several game lead on two teams at least as flawed as our own.

It's now a 30-odd game sprint and we're the ones starting with an edge. We've got 9 more games against the main competition and 6 of them will be at home before the sked ends with a favorable looking final two weeks.

Fasten your seatbelts folks - it's gonna be fun.
There have been a lot more seasons we'd be begging for this kind of excitement compared to the handful where it's considered a disappointment.

So true.....many a season at this point the only thing to look forward to was September call ups.......we have the Phills and Braves at Shea still to come.......

I'm going to be in Atlanta on the weekend of October 12th. If the Mets aren't playing, even if the Braves are or not...

I may need some legal representation for what may happen to Turner Field one night! =;)

In all seriousness though, it looks like Fred Wilpon is finally getting meaningfull games in September for the first time since 2001!

I can, 20 years ago now that I think of it. Specifically the night of 9/11/1987. Still have nightmares

I've been thinking maybe that SNY has been a subtly evil force when it comes to raising expectations to unsustainable levels. While I think Gary & Keith tell it like it is, it was only a matter of time before the owning its own media outlet would exert evil influences.

It's like, "No team with its own channel can be abused by the Phillies!"

Well they can.

Only a masochist thinks this is fun.

The next 5 weeks will be agony, and the only possible redemption of it will be if we make the post-season. While that will have made the agony worth, it and the accomplisment all the sweeter. it won't have made the remainder of this season any less agonizing.

My favorite kind of game is a crushing victory, where we score 12 runs in the first inning... and then slowly pull away. Its my favorite kind of pennant race as well.

Of course, you may like to have your nuts crunched. who am i to judge?

Well, with a lot on the line, it's more fun when they win, more agony when they lose.

Personally, i find that the agony I suffer is not worth the fun i have. Thats why i prefer my victories untainted by doubt.

but that's me.

I'm thinking of getting a new hobby.

And keep in mind that the Mets aren't as good as some fans want to believe. In June and July they had losing records.

MetMaven, is that you?

(sorry for the unflattering comparison, but he expressed similar sentiments)

Actually, it sounds more like the sentiments of Yankee fans, though that can also be an unflattering comparison. =;)
