stevejrogers Old-Timey Member Posted September 3, 2007 Author Posted September 3, 2007 2319 to make the Braves current streak 2 straight years without a divisional title and 10 to call it a season for the Nats and Fish.
stevejrogers Old-Timey Member Posted September 3, 2007 Author Posted September 3, 2007 Closing in on the top 20 with 2118 for the Bravos9 for the Fish and 8 for the Nats.
stevejrogers Old-Timey Member Posted September 4, 2007 Author Posted September 4, 2007 20Lets start doing this the right way16 now for the Braves
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted September 5, 2007 Posted September 5, 2007 Uniform numbers again? This is probably the fortieth time we've used uniform numbers for a countdown. (Maybe I should include a photo of Pat Zachry in this post.)
Willets Point Old-Timey Member Posted September 5, 2007 Posted September 5, 2007 I remember we did the periodic table for a while back in the spring.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted September 5, 2007 Posted September 5, 2007 A woman's face with Nature's own hand painted Hast thou, the master-mistress of my passion; A woman's gentle heart, but not acquainted With shifting change, as is false women's fashion; An eye more bright than theirs, less false in rolling, Gilding the object whereupon it gazeth; A man in hue, all 'hues' in his controlling, Much steals men's eyes and women's souls amazeth. And for a woman wert thou first created; Till Nature, as she wrought thee, fell a-doting, And by addition me of thee defeated, By adding one thing to my purpose nothing. But since she prick'd thee out for women's pleasure, Mine be thy love and thy love's use their treasure.
Willets Point Old-Timey Member Posted September 5, 2007 Posted September 5, 2007 Shakespearean Sonnets work well too. How about Dante's cantos?
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted September 5, 2007 Posted September 5, 2007 Yeah, the periodic table of the elements. That was badass.

(Maybe I should include a photo of Pat Zachry in this post.)Heh, well there is a "wrinkle" of sorts, only Uni numbers worn by members of the postseason roster of division winners (Sorry Ventura, Zeile, Alfonzo and others from 99-00). Hence Hojo, Agee and Green. Well otherwise I'd be spending time trying to locate a shot of 1973 Met Jerry May as well as adding Victor Diaz in the mix along with other wearers of various numbers through that particular season.
stevejrogers Old-Timey Member Posted September 5, 2007 Author Posted September 5, 2007 Fitting that a number that was used just on any of the previous 4 division winning postseason rosters appears on a day the number decreases thanks to a loss. Nothing against Bobby O, just feels a bit lonely having one guy representing #19, added to the taste of not winning today.
Valadius Old-Timey Member Posted September 5, 2007 Posted September 5, 2007 19 as the Braves score 7 runs in the last two innings to beat the Phillies 9-8.
stevejrogers Old-Timey Member Posted September 5, 2007 Author Posted September 5, 2007 Interesting and useless tidbit:Bobby Ojeda of course was injured for the 1988 postseason, and my copy of the 1973 NLCS program (IIRC its the Mets one, not the Reds) does list Brian Ostrosser as #19 even though he was no where near the postseason roster. My guess is he, along with John Strohmayer were just called up in August and would have been possiblities if there was an injury or two late.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted September 5, 2007 Posted September 5, 2007 Devouring Time, blunt thou the lion's paws, And make the earth devour her own sweet brood; Pluck the keen teeth from the fierce tiger's jaws, And burn the long-lived phoenix in her blood; Make glad and sorry seasons as thou fleets, And do whate'er thou wilt, swift-footed Time, To the wide world and all her fading sweets; But I forbid thee one most heinous crime: O, carve not with thy hours my love's fair brow, Nor draw no lines there with thine antique pen; Him in thy course untainted do allow For beauty's pattern to succeeding men. Yet, do thy worst, old Time: despite thy wrong, My love shall in my verse ever live young.

Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted September 6, 2007 Posted September 6, 2007 That wrinkle isn't all that interesting. It's still going to lead to more Darryl Strawberry and Keith Hernandez and Doc Gooden...How about this:The magic number is now in the custody of Rutherford B. Hayes, the 19th President of the United States.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted September 6, 2007 Posted September 6, 2007 The problems with the sonnets is that the order isn't arbitrary, but there's a narrative thread from one to the next, so posting them backwards is as much fun as reading a book backwards.I'm cool with presidents. Hayes won the most bitterly contested presidential election in US history, probably more so than 2000.He was till in the Army, fighting in the Civil War and holding the rank of brevet major general when he was nominated for the House of Representatives. He accepted the nomination, but refused to campaign, arguing, "an officer fit for duty who at this crisis would abandon his post to electioneer... ought to be scalped."
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted September 6, 2007 Posted September 6, 2007 I like the idea of bearded presidents. I think whoever is elected in 2008 should grow a beard. (Even if it's Hillary.)When was the last president with facial hair? Teddy Roosevelt?
Guest sharpie Guests Posted September 6, 2007 Posted September 6, 2007 Taft had a 'stache and followed Teddy. He was the last one.

At least a bunch of pictures can be amusing to look through.

Willets Point Old-Timey Member Posted September 6, 2007 Posted September 6, 2007 If we do Presidents then it would be great to clinch on Sept 17-19 at Washington. Not likely to likely to clinch that early, but maybe on Sept. 24-26 vs. Washington.

seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted September 6, 2007 Posted September 6, 2007 When we did the girls' names song lyrics things recently, someone complained that folks weren't actually reading the lyrics, they were just racing to get the next letter done. At least something with photographs allows for a little group interaction, rather than someone just posting one thing and that's that.I'm just saying.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted September 6, 2007 Posted September 6, 2007 That's cool. Just bustin' on your Elmo-lovin' ass.
seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted September 6, 2007 Posted September 6, 2007 (edited) Yeah. Let's just count down using pictures of Elmo. Edited September 6, 2007 by Guest
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted September 6, 2007 Posted September 6, 2007 Keep it three-wide, if you would.
seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted September 6, 2007 Posted September 6, 2007 Sorry. Widescreen here. Fixed.
