Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted June 5, 2007 Posted June 5, 2007 More investigating the UMDB Most Popular Lookup reasons.Date: 6/1Player: David WrightPossible Reasons:Back spasms?Date: 6/2Player: Jimmy PiersallPossible Reasons:I dinno. Perhaps it's related to May 29th, when a small New Endland paper referred to Julian Tavarez as a "modern-day Jimmy Piersall."Date: 6/3Player: Rich RodriguezPossible Reasons:West Virginia football coach Rich Rodriguez saw one of his players and one of his ex-players arrested a few days ago,Date: 6/4Player: Bud HarrelsonPossible Reasons:On June 3 in 1991, Hubie Brooks separated manager Bud Harrelson and David Cone, that night's pitcher, during a heated argument in the visitors' dugout in Riverfront Stadium in Cincinnati.Something cool happened at a Ducks game?
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted June 6, 2007 Posted June 6, 2007 The logs offer no insight regarding Bud Harrelson's popularity on June 4. (Sometimes the Google search words offer a clue. Not this time, though.)Jimmy Piersall won big on June 2. He had a large number of Google and Yahoo searches. No real clue as to why.You don't need to seek an explanation when David Wright finishes first. It's more of a surprise lately when he doesn't.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted June 6, 2007 Posted June 6, 2007 Date: 6/5Player: David WrightPossible Reasons:He's a peach!
Willets Point Old-Timey Member Posted June 6, 2007 Posted June 6, 2007 I'm hoping Billy Wynne has a really good day sometime soon.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted June 6, 2007 Posted June 6, 2007 Bud winning the day today would make more sense. It is, after all, his birthday: Born on D-Day

Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted June 7, 2007 Posted June 7, 2007 Ron Darling won yesterday. I'm guessing it's because of the clips they showed on SNY. Plus he was sitting behind the batter during the game.

Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted June 9, 2007 Posted June 9, 2007 Yesterday's win was the 121st for David Wright.Only two Mets have more: Keith Hernandez with 168 and Dwight Gooden with 160.If I had been counting daily winners all the way back to 1999, instead of starting in April 2003, Keith and Doc would have much higher numbers. And so would Mike Piazza, who's in sixth place with 80.McGraw has 84 official wins, Seaver has 83, Mazzilli has 77 and Darling has 67.After that comes a steep drop: Dykstra 44, Strawberry 28, Kranepool 20.

Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted June 12, 2007 Posted June 12, 2007 Ed Kranepool with a win on June 11. Perhaps because he was the answer to SNY's Aflac Trivia Question.(Which Met had the most base hits before turning 24 years old?)
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted June 12, 2007 Posted June 12, 2007 For some reason I can't determine, a lot of people are Googling Ed Glynn today.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted June 12, 2007 Posted June 12, 2007 Like you need a reason to Google Ed Glynn.
Willets Point Old-Timey Member Posted June 12, 2007 Posted June 12, 2007 I just Googled Ed Glynn for no good reason.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted June 12, 2007 Posted June 12, 2007 I guess that proves it then.
Lundy Old-Timey Member Posted June 12, 2007 Posted June 12, 2007 Yancy Street Gang wrote:For some reason I can't determine, a lot of people are Googling Ed Glynn today.Anthony of the "Opie and Anthony" radio show mentioned this morning that his mother briefly dated Ed Glynn back in the day...
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted June 12, 2007 Posted June 12, 2007 And there it is!Thanks for solving the mystery, Lundy!
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted June 20, 2007 Posted June 20, 2007 Huge number of hits yesterday for David Cone. Not as big as if he'd robbed a jewelry store or flew a plane into a building, but about as big as if he'd beheaded a cat. The logs show a lot of searches on phrases like "caught in the act" and "caught in the bullpen."Clearly the incident got a prominent mention yesterday. Howard Stern, perhaps?
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted June 20, 2007 Posted June 20, 2007 I sense that "beheading the cat" will soon be a new euphemism for wanking.

Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted June 29, 2007 Posted June 29, 2007 Date: 6/28Player: Anthony YoungPossible Reasons: Anthony Reyes. And, as long as Reyes keeps losing, Anthony Young hits may shoot up every time Reyes takes the mound.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted July 4, 2007 Posted July 4, 2007 Early explanation of the likely July 4 leader:http://www.forums.mlb.com/n/pfx/forum.aspx?tsn=31&nav=messages&webtag=ml-mets&tid=258476
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted July 5, 2007 Posted July 5, 2007 UMDB traffic today is well below the summertime average. I guess a lot of people are off from work, and those who are in front of a computer probably are trying not to think about the Mets on the day after a 17-7 loss and a three-game sweep. This is the kind of day when an obscure Met can sneak out a victory with a relatively small number of hits.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted July 5, 2007 Posted July 5, 2007 A greater question is whether Bruce Boisclair's Independence Day victory will catapult him back toward the top twenty.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted July 5, 2007 Posted July 5, 2007 I'm afraid that Bruce would need a month filled with Independence Days in order to get back into the Top Twenty. It's hard to believe he was ever there. Right now he's tangling with Jose Reyes for the honor of being in 43rd place.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted July 5, 2007 Posted July 5, 2007 Wright is 15th and Reyes 43rd?We are a bunch of racists.
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted July 5, 2007 Posted July 5, 2007 How much looking up of David Wright can one fan base do in one season? Not that UMDB shouldn't be the fast 'n' first source for all Met biography, but after a while, wouldn't everybody who needs to know something about David Wright have gleaned it already? He's kind of a mass-market paperback open book.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted July 19, 2007 Posted July 19, 2007 Joe Torre's win on July 18 was, surprisingly, his first ever.He was the second highest ranked Met who had never been a daily lookup leader. (He's currently in 40th place overall.)Care to guess the current top ten? (These would be the ten players with the most lookups who have never been a most popular lookup on any given day.)Hints: Four of the ten have played for the Mets in the current decade.Six of them have played for the Mets in at least one World Series game.Three of them have never played in a post-season game for the Mets.Three of them were teammates of Ed Kranepool. One of them won one of the major post-season awards while with another team. One guess for each person. If anyone posts more than one guess I'll respond to the first and ignore the following guesses. Once I've acknowledged your guess as right or wrong, feel free to make another.
