To be played at Yankee Stadium.

To feature a National League squad packed with Mets.

Oh no....cue untrue stories about how Ruth and Gerhig and Joe D played on that very fuckin grass....not to mention Jeter....

Posted

i'd love to see Wright, Reyes, Beltran, Delgado, and a few pitchers on the squad and Jeter the lone yankee voted in (or better yet, an injured jeter and no yankees)

Posted

I eagerly look forward to Reyes, Wright, Delgado, LoDuca, and starting pitcher John Maine doffing their caps to a chorus of boos as starting lineups are announced.

Mr. irish, meet Mr. Selig:

"Yankee Stadium, I think you might even agree with me, is the most famous stadium in the world. You consider all the things that have happened there since it was built in 1923 -- the events that have been held there, the players who have played there, from Ruth to Gehrig to DiMaggio, to Mantle to Berra and on and on and on. It's unbelievable. It's phenomenal.

"I felt it even as a kid walking in there. It was special, it was unique. You know how much all of this means to me. In the end, this was an easy one."

I swear I didn't see that silly quote before I posted, and it's debatable as to weather it's the most famous stadium in the world.....

I'd put Fenway and Wrigley in the same category. Madison Square Garden though is definetaly better known than any of them.

Figuring on MLB's penchant for putting AS games in new stadiums, NYC could conceivably see 3 AS games in the next decade after having just one over the last 43 years.

Any Met fan younger than 41 years old hasn't seen a home ASG in their lifetime. I used to try and count the years till they'd have one and figured, maybe the mid to late 80s. But Shea just hasn't wanted one. It's weird.

I was thinking three of the four Willets posted, but how about
?

THe only time I've ever been to the old Wembley Stadium was July, 1987. Backpacking through Europe that summer.

Saw U2 on the Joshua Tree Tour.

Lou Reed and The Pogues were the opening acts. Bono had a cast on his arm as a result of breaking it at a previous stop on the tour.

We made our way down to the front of the stage which was cool until litre size glass bottles of beer started getting hurled straight up into the air and crashing down on people's heads.

Moved a bit farther back for the rest of that show. Bought a wall-sized concert poster outside the stadium, rolled it up and carried it with me for the next 7 weeks all over the continent. Still have it. Framed and hanging in my office at home.

It usually goes to new stadiums, and since Shea isn't a classic like Fenway or Wrigley, it gets passed over.

Though Yankee Stadium did hold one in '77*, so it seems odd they pick it again. It also will delay Citi Field being chosen; I don't think MLB will want to have it in New York again for several years.

*I was on the field with the players, BTW.

That would all be nice. But what I'd really like to see is Willie Randolph as the National League manager.

And Joe Torre sitting in the stands, of course.

Maybe Willie can name him honorary National League coach. He can wear his old gray No. 9 with the blue and orange piping around the collar and cuffs.

ok, I think Edgy wins. If you haven't heard of the coliseum in Rome you should be shot to help raise society's collective IQ.

Soupcan, is it possible you are mixing your memory of the Wembley show with one from later in the tour (ie.in the fall of '87)? Bono didn't hurt his arm until the DC show in September...

When's that coliseum in Rome going to be completed? I mean, I like the
architecture and all, but isn't it a little early for it be called a classic when
it's only halfway done?

Relax, KC.
The Colliseum construction is being delayed because they're reviewing the plans. It seems someone noticed that the left field line is going to be very short (about 250 feet). So they'd have to erect a high screen if they didn't change the plans.

Well it was 20 years ago, I was drunk and probably stoned. I've always been prone to forgetfulness but I'm 99% certain that the man had a cast on his arm at that show in July.

"Selig said one of the primary reasons Yankee Stadium was selected was to honor Steinbrenner for the owners many years in baseball."

Pukie.

And for extending his streak of not being suspended or under threat of banishment for acts both illegal and immoral up to double-digit years.

Someone called up Steve Somers on WFAN last night with a suggestion that they hold the 2008 Home Run Derby at Shea the night before the ASG. It would make it part of a "New York" event and show some props to the about-to-be-replaced Shea.

Thoughts about the idea?

Well, as much as I don't care about the freaking home-run derby, I think it'd get the righthand-hitters off the hook somewhat.

Selig threw a bone the Mets way at the yankee love-fest yesterday.

]

But before all the crosstown fans on the Mets' side start feeling a little left out, Selig put out something for them, as well. A tiny teaser. He said that in his mind he's penciled in their team somewhere in the all-star lineup down the not-too-distant road, not long after the Cards have the game in 2009.

"I can assure you," the commish said, "the Mets are on my radar screen when they get a new stadium."

I liked this for about a minute, but the more I think about it, the more it reminds me of the former mayor's offer to let the Mets march off to the side at the 2000 ticker-tape parade. Let YS have its moment (it's had so few).

Maybe the first pitch could be thrown out at Shea and there could be a relay, as with the Olympic torch, over the Triborough.

If this were 1959-1962, we could each get an ASG.

How about Fred Wilpon tell anyone that makes any kind of offer to include Shea Stadium in any way to sit on this and rotate....

Fuck the All-Star Game and fuck the yankees.
