Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted January 24, 2007 Posted January 24, 2007 I'm compiling a history of Mets affiliates for the UMDB, and I've been using old Sporting News Baseball Guides and yearbooks as sources. Since soupcan posted a yearbook thread today, I thought I'd share what I have so far in case anyone is interested in helping me fill in some of the gaps. (Note: in 1962 the Mets actually shared the Syracuse Chiefs with the Washington Senators. Also, as far as I can determine, the Mets didn't get their first AA team until 1964. I believe I have a complete list of AAA and AA teams, it's just the A and Rookie teams that still need to be completed.)Mets 1962 Minor League Affiliates * Syracuse Chiefs (International League, Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted January 24, 2007 Posted January 24, 2007 So this marks the first time ever the Mets aren't in the International League.
Guest Johnny Dickshot Guests Posted January 24, 2007 Posted January 24, 2007 The Mets had some prehistorical working agreements with low-minors teams in 1961: Mobile of the Southern Association and Raleigh of the Piedmont League. Will check with my stuff later, not certain of the leagues...
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted January 24, 2007 Posted January 24, 2007 You've got to get Savannah and Kingsport in there for 2007.You're also missing the Gulf Coast Mets for however long they've been around. the Baseball Cube says they've been around since 1988. Wow.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted January 24, 2007 Author Posted January 24, 2007 I wasn't sure if the Mets were still going to be in Kingsport. I did know about Savannah, though. I wasn't sure of the history of the Gulf Coast Mets. Are they the same as the Sarasota Mets, but only with a different name? (Maybe so. My 1989 yearbook mentions the Sarasota Mets.)
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted January 24, 2007 Posted January 24, 2007 I think it's the Gulf Coast League and all the affiliates are the Gulf Coast This and the Gulf Coast That, stationed in golf towns within a few hundred miles of each other. The common nomenclature sounds like a latter day development.Sounds like a rellatively cushy entry level job for a manager.
Sandgnat Old-Timey Member Posted January 24, 2007 Posted January 24, 2007 What about the VSL Mets of the Venezuelan Summer League?
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted January 24, 2007 Posted January 24, 2007 The current GC-Mets of the (entry level) Gulf Coast League are heading into only their 3rd year of existance and are not a continuation or relocation of any earlier line. They were concocted strictly as an extra (7th) affiliate.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted January 24, 2007 Posted January 24, 2007 That's what I thought, but then I went ot confirm it, and this page showed me what looked like the team going back to 1983, and records back to 1988.But now I see a lack of continuity from 1999 to 2004 and some other jumping around-ness and I'm rather certain they've conflated some of their data.
Vic Sage Old-Timey Member Posted January 25, 2007 Posted January 25, 2007 i was wondering... we've had a structure of: - 1 Rookie league team- 3 A ball teams (low A / High A)- 1 AA team- 1 AAA teamsince the early 80s. Is this structure typical for MLB teams during this period?
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted January 25, 2007 Author Posted January 25, 2007 It actually goes back farther than that. I have an updated list that I can post. Please hold...

Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted January 25, 2007 Posted January 25, 2007 It's pretty typical, but we have one more team than most and two more than some.

Are you saying the Mets have no rookie league teams this year? Or simply that they haven't announced their rookie league affiliations yet?
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted January 25, 2007 Posted January 25, 2007 I thing any league that's a half season can be considered a Rookie league.

Guest Johnny Dickshot Guests Posted January 25, 2007 Posted January 25, 2007 Great work!Just in my own mind, I consider this the "classic" Met organization (early 80s):Tidewater Tides (International League, AAA) Jackson Mets (Texas League, AA) Lynchburg Mets (Carolina League, A) Columbia Mets (South Atlantic League, A) Little Falls Mets (New York-Penn League, A) Kingsport Mets (Appalachian League, Rookie) I was, and still am I suppose, fascinated by the Visalia Mets. As a kid, it seemed like there was this place all the way out in california where there were Mets was just the coolest thing. Never been to Visalia (which I think is an fruit & veggie-growing town in central Cally) but would still like to go, even if (as I suspect) there is nothing to see there.I never knew there were Met clubs in Mankato, Wausau or Gray's Harbor.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted January 25, 2007 Posted January 25, 2007 Kingsport & the GCL Mets will return for 20076 teams has been typical for a while with most teams having 4 full-seasons teams (AAA, AA, High-A & low-A) plus 2 short-season/rookie teams. They do distinguish between 'Short-Season' & 'Rookie' but I guess they could really just be considered High-Rookie and Lower-Rookie.Sometimes, due to affiliate shuffles, a club will find themselves with 2 teams on one level and none on another but those are usually just temporary until they can strike a new deal somewhere.Adding the GCL team gave the Mets one extra Rookie league team and made them the only team w/7 affiliates. Toronto just this winter dropped their Appalachian League team and are going with just 5 teams in their stable. As there's been talk recently of junking some of those lower leagues (on the theory that no one except scouts are watching anyway so why not just turn them into instructional type leagues w/intersquad games) perhaps smaller is going to be the wave of the future.

If I remember correctly, Visalia is near some of the national parks like Yosemite and Sequoia. So I might actually visit Visalia this year.It does seem strange to see Mets affiliates so far to the west. (Grays Harbor, by the way, is in Washington State. Mankato is in Minnesota.) Another recent trend is teams trying to get their affiliates closer to home, at least within the same time zone. It's funny that that's happening now, when travel is easier. You'd think it would have been more of a concern 40 years ago. This collecting of afflilates is a step towards an even larger goal, of getting minor-league rosters, as well as some stats, on the UMDB. It might one day be possible to see at least the name, and maybe even the records, of everyone who ever played in the Mets organization. I was able to get some numbers and names electronically, and they'll be posted before long. For the rest, it will be slow going, and only as time and motivation permits. I may put out a call for volunteers, so if anyone's interested in doing some data keying as part of this ambitious goal, I'd be glad for whatever contributions you'd be willing to make.

MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted January 25, 2007 Posted January 25, 2007 ]Auburn Mets (New York-Pennsylvania League, D) Wow!That was a memory jogger. For you younger folks, minor league levels used to be AAA, AA, A, B, C and D.(No rookie leagues)Maybe someone complained that it was harmful to the self esteem of citizens of cities that were considered "D" cities. So the level structure was changed to what it is today.Later

A moment of silence over the significance of him quitting. ANNIE I'm quitting too. Boys, not baseball. CRASH There might be an opening for a manager at Salem next spring. ANNIE Salem, Massachusetts? Where all the witches were? CRASH Yeah...you a witch? ANNIE Not yet. It takes years of practice... He smiles slightly and takes her hand. CRASH You think I could make it to the Show as a manager? ANNIE You'd be great, just great...

A & B batteries are used in devices with vacuum tubes, which is why you don't see them anymore.
