Gwreck Old-Timey Member Posted November 5, 2006 Posted November 5, 2006 6 - Carlos Baerga? Umm, 75 games?
Guest cooby Guests Posted November 5, 2006 Posted November 5, 2006 Don't let that stop you from giving it a try
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted November 5, 2006 Posted November 5, 2006 SteveJRogers wrote:BTW, what is it with #8 and catchers? There's actually an answer to this. As numbers were originally assigned to coincide with a player's position in the batting order (Ruth:3; Gehrig: 4), the catcher --- tending at the time to be the next to worst hitter in the lineup, after the pitcher --- got assigned 8 a lot, because they batted eighth a lot.Randomly, I checked retrosheet for opening day in 1922. They have boxscores for four games that day. Of the eight teams in those four games, all eight batted their catcher eigth.I wouldn't be surprised if there weren't some teams with catchers who hit well enough to warrant a better slot, but we're run by managers who didn't want to break convention.Though the convention has long since passed, catchers oft carry on the tradition to wear what their forebears wore, even if they're not sure why.Besides, it's a good number for a catcher. It's symmetrical, for the only player who is regularly photographed from from benind. It's got a no-nonsense earthiness to it (nothing mystical about 8), and when rendered in block letters it has the working-class stockiness of a catcher.

You rarely get a shot from behind home plate during games, and when you do the umpire gets in the way.

Guest iramets Guests Posted November 6, 2006 Posted November 6, 2006 I'm going to guess Chuck Hiller for #2, and Joe Orsulak for # 6.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted November 6, 2006 Posted November 6, 2006 I already failed on Orsulak. And I stand by my contention that the 8 looks good on a catcher's back. There is some mysticism to a hand-drawn 8, with it's infinity symbolism and all, but I still like a rock-solid block-rendered 8 on a backstop.
Guest Johnny Dickshot Guests Posted November 6, 2006 Posted November 6, 2006 Chuck Hiller is wrong, but not by much.
Guest KC Guests Posted November 6, 2006 Posted November 6, 2006 I confess, I suck.OE: oh sure, I suck has to top a new page to boot.
Guest Yancy Street Gang Guests Posted November 6, 2006 Posted November 6, 2006 I remember running a similar quiz, but with uniform number not a factor. Who batted leadoff most often, who batted second, etc.I'll have to see if I can find that...
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted November 6, 2006 Posted November 6, 2006 Poor Cooby after her exhaustive search it took only 22 minutes for the correct answers..
Guest Yancy Street Gang Guests Posted November 6, 2006 Posted November 6, 2006 All the clicking she did probably earned me about 30 cents in ad revenue.

seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted November 7, 2006 Posted November 7, 2006 The first six that came to mind was Melvin Mora, he wasn't around long enough. Are we allowed to at least look at the list on MBTN?
