Valadius Old-Timey Member Posted October 23, 2006 Author Posted October 23, 2006 Here's Kenny Rogers again.
Valadius Old-Timey Member Posted October 23, 2006 Author Posted October 23, 2006 Here's a playing-days Willie Randolph.
Guest cooby Guests Posted October 23, 2006 Posted October 23, 2006 I think Yancy ought to commission Zvon to draw all the guys in blue hats that he is missing.
Valadius Old-Timey Member Posted October 23, 2006 Author Posted October 23, 2006 Also, Endy Chavez's middle name is DeJesus, not William, according to ESPN.com and Wikipedia.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted October 23, 2006 Posted October 23, 2006 Mets.com has it as William.
Valadius Old-Timey Member Posted October 23, 2006 Author Posted October 23, 2006 Oh wait a minute, go to the bottom of his profile on Mets.com, it says "Endy DeJesus Chavez graduated from Liceo Batalia Carabobo High School in Valencia, VZ". So I'm guessing DeJesus is right, and William is just a mistake.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted October 23, 2006 Posted October 23, 2006 I'm still not sure without seeing his birth certificate. It is very common on Spanish speaking countries to use the mother's maiden name as part of the person's second-to-last name. Unlike where women today use a hyphen when they add their married name to their maiden name, the Latinos do not hyphenate them. Someone unfamilliar with that custom could easily mistake the mother's name as a middle name. So, William may be his true middle name.Later
Valadius Old-Timey Member Posted October 23, 2006 Author Posted October 23, 2006 Actually, MFS, as I understand it, it's the opposite. The mother's maiden name is actually tacked on at the end in Spanish-speaking countries. From Wikipedia article on "Family name":However, nowadays in Spain and in many countries of Hispanic culture (former Spanish colonies, e.g. Mexico, Honduras, Colombia, Peru, Chile, Venezuela), most people have two surnames, although in some situations only the first is used. The first surname is the paternal one, inherited from the father's paternal surname. The second surname is the maternal one, inherited from the mother's paternal surname. (As an example, Mexican boxer Marco Antonio Barrera's full name is Marco Antonio Barrera Tapia, though Barrera is the only one used in general conversation.)

MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted October 23, 2006 Posted October 23, 2006 Thanks, Val. So, it still becomes a surname, not a middle name.Later
Guest Yancy Street Gang Guests Posted October 23, 2006 Posted October 23, 2006 Not too often any more, but I used to draw (and paint) a lot.I'll probably start up again after my kids are a little older.
Guest Yancy Street Gang Guests Posted October 23, 2006 Posted October 23, 2006 I know. I probably should have said "maybe" and "after I retire."
