Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted October 4, 2006 Posted October 4, 2006 The personal sacrifices Beltran made for this team almost make me cry.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted October 4, 2006 Posted October 4, 2006 Slow and steady wins the race. And (some of you may remember this)"The big "E" lights up on the Schaeffer scoreboard" But in David' s case, it stands for Excellent.Good job, David. And good job, Yancy.ThanksLater
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted October 4, 2006 Posted October 4, 2006 Great work Yancy, sorry I slacked of in the second half.
nymr83 Old-Timey Member Posted October 4, 2006 Posted October 4, 2006 you guys know i'm the biggest Wright supporter out there, but I think we've just found a huge flaw in the system here, Beltran was clearly the best player on the Mets this year. if you want to call the MVP the guy with the best numbers, its Beltran. if you want to say the MVP is the guy who did the most when it mattered i think thats Beltran too. the last week of the season (when wright took over) was MEANINGLESS, Beltran did the team as much good sitting on the bench getting himself rested as he would have in the lineup.
Guest Yancy Street Gang Guests Posted October 4, 2006 Posted October 4, 2006 Yep. The whole thought behind Schaefer (or any POTG system) is using points accrued in individual games. Wright's win this year is flukey. I doubt that anyone thinks he was the Mets best player this year. But the system does favor the guy who takes the field more frequently. Beltran played better, but Wright played pretty darn well too, and more often. And that tilted the balance in his favor.
Guest sharpie Guests Posted October 4, 2006 Posted October 4, 2006 In the Mets MVP thread the vote is Beltran 16, Reyes 10, Wright 0.
metsmarathon Old-Timey Member Posted October 4, 2006 Posted October 4, 2006 in related news, the metsmarathon player of the year is...carlos beltran. sorry no flashy graphics. marathon mvp player points 1 Beltran 138 2 Reyes 124 3 Wright 118 4 Glavine 114 5 Delgado 114 6 Martinez 81 7 Ohernandez 74 8 Trachsel 72 9 Valentin 70 10 Maine 49 and the metsmarathon rookie of the year is...john maine marathon rookie player points 1 Maine 49 2 Bannister 23 3 Soler 23 4 Milledge 17 5 Ring (?) 11 6 Pelfrey 6 7 Hernandez 4 8 Humber 2 9 Owens 1 congrats all.
Willets Point Old-Timey Member Posted October 4, 2006 Posted October 4, 2006 Congrats David! I love that boy.
Guest Johnny Dickshot Guests Posted October 4, 2006 Posted October 4, 2006 This is like when Terry Labonte won the Winston Cup.
metsmarathon Old-Timey Member Posted October 4, 2006 Posted October 4, 2006 i blame myself. clearly i had beltran as the more valuable met, but because of my inconsistency in voting, i was unable to sufficiently boost carlos into the position of primacy that he deserves.its neither david's fault, nor yancy's, that i didnt vote as often as i should have. the systems works. this particular voter, does not.
Guest cooby Guests Posted October 4, 2006 Posted October 4, 2006 Wait, isn't Beltran your choice?Edit, oh you mean in Yancy's...
Willets Point Old-Timey Member Posted October 4, 2006 Posted October 4, 2006 I don't think the system is flawed and I don't think it's fair to say Wright won on performance in the last week of the season. Wright was key to the Mets hot start in April and May, a time when Beltran was still being booed (albeit stupidly) for perceived lack of production. Yeah, he slumped in August, but overall he's been consistent over the entire season. I believe this win is well-deserved, and hell, Wright, Beltran, Delgado, & Reyes are all pretty close at the top in point so they're all MVP's to me.
Guest Yancy Street Gang Guests Posted October 4, 2006 Posted October 4, 2006 So now we owe Wright two six-packs of beer.

metsmarathon Old-Timey Member Posted October 4, 2006 Posted October 4, 2006 i dont think its flawed either. i think we overvalue (or overvote, or maybe its right afterall) when a player wins a game in teh final at bat. and wright seems to have had a lot of "clutch" performances, while i don't think carlos has had quite as many. i also think that maybe DW benefits from a more difficult-looking position, and gets bonus points for defense while carlos tracks down distant fly balls smoothly, and without extra vote-culling attention. from a win share perspective, beltran leads wright 38 to 32, with reyes at 29 and delgado at 24.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted October 4, 2006 Posted October 4, 2006 Hey, no one ever claimed that PotG is a perfect system.Besides, you'll all have a shot at rebuttal if you join in on the 2006 Rankings Project. PotG results will count merely as one vote there so the more subjective views of those participating have plenty of opportunity for "correction".
metsmarathon Old-Timey Member Posted October 4, 2006 Posted October 4, 2006 and then there's the other answer that our collective perception that beltran is really the mvp could be wrong...
Zvon Old-Timey Member Posted October 4, 2006 Posted October 4, 2006 Congrads to David Wright!Great layout in the lead post Yancy.UdAmAn!Thnx for this. You deserve a case of Schaefer.(does beer get better with age?)
Elster88 Old-Timey Member Posted October 4, 2006 Posted October 4, 2006 Thanks for your hard work again Yancy.PotG results:Yancy Street Game 6
Guest ScarletKnight41 Guests Posted October 4, 2006 Posted October 4, 2006 Congratulations to Young David
nymr83 Old-Timey Member Posted October 4, 2006 Posted October 4, 2006 ]I don't think it's fair to say Wright won on performance in the last week of the seasonIt is pure fact. Beltran led with a week to go and didnt play the last week.Wright certainly stayed close the whole way, but he WON it on the last week.
Valadius Old-Timey Member Posted October 5, 2006 Posted October 5, 2006 I don't think it's fair to end the vote tallying when we're still on the field playing baseball. I'd hold off on calling David Wright player of the year. Player of the Regular Season? Sure. But we're still playing here.
Guest Yancy Street Gang Guests Posted October 5, 2006 Posted October 5, 2006 I am indifferent to your outrage, especially since it's coming from someone who hasn't participated all year. After tallying 162 games and seeing the apathy grow, I think I have the right to decide not to put any further effort into this thing.I'll consider Schaefering the 2007 postseason if there's strong interest in September, and, of course, if the Mets participate. But I'm not going to take the time to modify the software to please seven voters and one opinionated non-voter.
Guest ScarletKnight41 Guests Posted October 5, 2006 Posted October 5, 2006 I didn't say it before, but thank you Yancy for doing this over the course of a 6-month season. It takes a lot to keep up with this kind of thing day in and day out, and I think that we all really appreciate it (even if we don't always show it).
Guest Yancy Street Gang Guests Posted October 5, 2006 Posted October 5, 2006 You're welcome!I do enjoy the Schaefer thing. I feel in a way like we're following in the footsteps of Lindsey, Ralph, and Bob. And since I have it automated to the point where I can tally a game in a matter of minutes, I'm sure I'll fire it up again in 2007.I do wish there was more participation though. Back in April we were routinely getting 20 to 25 voters per game, but by September it was only about 7.
Theoldmole Old-Timey Member Posted October 5, 2006 Posted October 5, 2006 A system with a flaw in it? Stop the presses!
