Guest Johnny Dickshot Guests Posted May 2, 2006 Posted May 2, 2006 Tempting fate here, but the ’06 Mets after 25 games are tied for the third-winningest 25-game start in Met history, or among the top 90some percent of all met teams ever.I'll try to keep this updated periodically, but here are Met wins after 25 games:20 wins198619 winsNever achieved18 wins1988, 197217 wins1985, 200616 wins1971, 199915 wins1984, 1991, 1992, 2000, 200214 wins198913 wins1970, 1987, 199812 wins1973, 1982, 1990, 1994, 200511 wins1966, 1968, 1969, 1975, 1978, 1996, 1997, 200310 wins1963, 1967, 1974, 1977, 1995, 2001, 20049 wins1965, 1979, 1980, 1993, 8 wins1981, 19837 wins19626 wins1964
stevejrogers Old-Timey Member Posted May 2, 2006 Posted May 2, 2006 Two of those years were 100 + years, 1972 followed two straight 81 win seasons in a horrid division
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted May 2, 2006 Posted May 2, 2006 That 1972 team could've done so much better. It was a better team than the one that won the pennant the following year. Now it can serve us as a cautionary tale for 2006. There's still a long way to go in this season. It's great that the Mets have jumped out to this kind of start, but we're a far way from clinching anything. The magic number is 132.
Guest Johnny Dickshot Guests Posted May 2, 2006 Posted May 2, 2006 Several injuries derailed the '72 train, but the big one was Rusty's broken wrist. He was basically the team's best hitter that year.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted May 2, 2006 Posted May 2, 2006 Duffy Dyer did the majority of catching in 1972, and, if you believe Win Shares, was the team's MVP among non-pitchers (maybe even including pitchers, if I recall correctly, which is, of course, wrong). Did Grote lose his job through injury or poor play.
Guest Johnny Dickshot Guests Posted May 19, 2006 Posted May 19, 2006 at the 40-game mark, the 06 Mets are 5 games back from the pace of the 72ers, 86ers and 88ers. Guest Johnny Dickshot Guests Posted June 10, 2006 Posted June 10, 2006 At the 60-game mark, the Mets have fallen further off the pace from the 86ers, but so has every other team. The 06ers in the meantime have leaped over the struggling 88ers and slow-fading 71ers to become, along with 1972ers, the third-best Met team in history after 60 games.Playoff qualifyers in bold. Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted June 10, 2006 Posted June 10, 2006 Not 'mongst the best 60-game starts I would suppose.Remember that was the year we started 27-28 before Phillips axed several of Bobby's coaches during a weekend series vs the MFY. We then won the Sunday game which started a run where we went 40-15.So I'm guessing the 60-game mark that year was no better than 32-28

Guest Johnny Dickshot Guests Posted August 25, 2006 Posted August 25, 2006 Thanks. I mean to update this thing at round numbers but always remember at odd times.By the way, today we're at a current win% that would equal exactly 100 wins at seasons end (or almost exactly, like 100.1something). And we're just four more wins from assuring a better-than 500 record.
Diamond Dad Old-Timey Member Posted August 25, 2006 Posted August 25, 2006 the 2006 team is doing this without the kind of starting pitching that the '86 team had. The '86 Mets starters had the following records at season's end:Gooden -- 17-6Ojeda -- 18-5Darling -- 15-6Fernandez -- 16-6Aguillera -- 10-7By contrast, the current 2006 Mets:Glavine -- 12-6Martinez - 9-5Trachsel - 13-5 nobody else will get as many as 10 wins

stevejrogers Old-Timey Member Posted September 13, 2006 Posted September 13, 2006 10-7 gets us to 100Right now I'm more concerned with the 2 or 1 win that clinches the darn division, but here is the schedule the rest of the way:9/15-9/17 at Pittsburgh9/18-9/21 vs Flordia9/22-9/25 vs Washington9/26-9/28 at Atlanta9/29-10/1 at WashingtonThursday the 14th is our only Day Off in between now and the end of the regular season. I would love to see 100, but with the lack of days off I'm thinking that Willie will be doing more experimentation for 2007 and resting players for October than actually winning after the division is finally clinched.Granted Florida is the only SERIOUS contender left, and I'm wondering if dropping 2 to the Mets didn't take alot out of their sails. Possbility that the Braves "surge" back into the WC race by the time we get down there as well (though the way they've played against the Phils, it looks like they have started thinking about winter plans), and it won't have the same feel September in Atlanta usually does for the Mets This should be interesting to watch though

While it is mostly the Nats and Braves rest of the way, I wouldn't be surprised if starting Tuesday Willie starts doing experimentation for 2007
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted September 29, 2006 Posted September 29, 2006 The Mets will go into the playoffs with only two 10-game winners on their pitching staff, the fewest ever for a Mets team that made the postseason. The 1969 team had only three, by the way.
