Guest KC Guests Posted January 25, 2006 Posted January 25, 2006 I realize the discussion about the new network is all buried in the Cohen toMTV thread but we need one clear as day about how pissed off we're goingto be if there is no broadcast of the new network on all mediums by 3/18 orwhatever the date is. We don't want to wait until mid-May, late April, second week of April ... WEWANT A RESOLUTION IN PLACE SOON so we get EVERY broadcast andthat includes spring training and whatever is shown from day one.DO NOT SCREW US. Thank you.
Guest ScarletKnight41 Guests Posted January 25, 2006 Posted January 25, 2006 Don't screw with my buds or we'll get CF on your ass. Trust me, you don't want to have to deal with him - he's relentless!

metirish Old-Timey Member Posted January 25, 2006 Posted January 25, 2006 Well now that I live in a Cablevision town I am worried, please Mr. Dolan do not fuck with us.....thanks.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted February 17, 2006 Posted February 17, 2006 ]Deja view all over again SNY-Cablevision fight possibleIn less than one month - March 16, to be exact - SportsNet New York, the TV home of the Mets, is scheduled to debut. Will you be able to watch it?The question is on the minds of Mets fans who were just spectators on March 19, 2002, when Cablevision, which has more than three million subscribers in the metropolitan area, blacked out opening night of George Steinbrenner's Yankees Sports & Entertainment Network.Cablevision, and its boss James Dolan, proceeded to go to war with YES, refusing to carry the network - and Yankees baseball - for the entire 2002 season. YES and Cablevision did not sign a contract until March 31, 2003 - at exactly 6:39 p.m. - allowing fans, who had been jerked around for an entire season, to catch the Bombers' 2003 opener in Toronto.Up until that point, what transpired were a few attempts at productive negotiations and more than a year of PR spin from both sides. There also were lies, politicians using the situation for personal gain and many Yankee fans dumping cable TV for satellite providers. The saddest part of the conflict was how it affected elderly fans, who had invested a lifetime of emotions in a sport they loved. Senior citizens - some confined to hospitals, their own homes, or elder-care facilities - were deprived of their greatest pleasure. And that was simply having the ability to turn on their TV and watch the Yankees. This was of absolutely no concern to Dolan, who wielded Cablevision's monopoly power like a bully; or Steinbrenner, and his partner, investment bank Goldman Sachs, who used the Yankees' recent success to squeeze as much money as they could from cable operators.Fan interest always finishes second to busine$$. That's what the YES-Cablevision thing was about. That's what it will be about for Fred Wilpon, and the executives running SNY as well. And yet, as things stand today, chances of Mets fans getting to see SNY when it launches appear to be better than they were in the month leading up to YES' 2002 debut.Wilpon is coming to the negotiating table with two cable/entertainment behemoths - Time Warner and Comcast - as his partners in SNY. Not only does this guarantee SNY distribution on local Time Warner and Comcast cable systems, it is also advantageous in the relationship department. Dolan and Time Warner chief Dick Parsons didn't swap Valentine's Day cards the other day, but Cablevision - as a programmer - already has deals in place with Time Warner and Comcast. In the future, Cablevision will bring new networks onto the market while also looking to renew old deals. So, it may make it easier for Cablevision to carry SNY when it knows down the road, during a negotiation, Time Warner or Comcast might be more inclined to cut a deal with Cablevision to carry one of its networks - like AMC, MSG, or FSNY.Out of the YES/Cablevision settlement also came an arbitrator's decision, setting a precedent that regional sports networks should be placed on an "expanded basic" rather than a "premium" tier. With this issue likely off the board, the key negotiating point between SNY and any cable operator, or satellite service, is price. While YES came on the market looking for cable operators to pay about $2.25 per month per subscriber, SNY's asking price appears to be in the $1.60-$1.75 range. Those inclined to be optimistic also believe that because the bulk of Cablevision subscribers reside on Long Island - Mets country - cutting a deal with SNY will be more of a priority, and more palatable, for Dolan. While the path to an agreement between SNY and Cablevision appears to be less littered than the one YES had four years ago, this does not guarantee the two parties will get to the end of the road - a deal. This is why there is absolutely no reason for optimism until a contract is signed. Already, there is some resistance to carrying SNY. Patriot Media, a cable operator servicing 80,000 households in New Jersey (Hunterdon, Somerset, Morris and Mercer counties) has told some of its subscribers it won't carry SNY because of "certain requirements imposed" by "that network."Cable operators never are obligated to provide a definitive reason for a business decision, like raising rates or not carrying SNY, because they are monopolies. With the exception of satellite providers - DirecTV, Dish Network - they have no competition.Over the years, Cablevision has taken advantage of its dual role as a cable operator/programmer. When it owned SportsChannel, Cablevision messed with MSG. Then came YES.Why should SNY be any different? So, Mets fans, until further notice, hope for the best. And prepare for the worst. Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted February 17, 2006 Posted February 17, 2006 I was reading a story the other day about places where phone companies have been permitted to enter the cable market and compete with established providers. In places where it's already happened the existing cable companies wound up dropping rates by 25%. By the same principle, if programmers had another outlet to reach Cablevision customers there'd be very little hard-ball playing and denial of services. But of course the cable systems all deny acting as monopolies.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted February 17, 2006 Posted February 17, 2006 That's what happened in DC. District Cablevision was as corrupt and inept as, well, as somebody who got an exclusive contract from the DC government in the nineteen-eighties could be expected to be.Star Power came in, and it was compete or die for District Cablevision.
Guest Johnny Dickshot Guests Posted February 17, 2006 Posted February 17, 2006 I'm more cahnfident that this dispute gets settled soon. The Dolans shirley will be dicks about it, but they just can't survive denying Long Islanders of their Mets, and there's no upside to it. At least when they stuck up TWC last year it was about keeping their own (shitty) programming on the systems. As y'all know I was real active writing every politician I could vote for. Got the best and most enthusiastic responses from state assemblymen, Spitzer, and mainly, Senator Hilary, whose staff really worked hard: They cc'ed everybody up and down the food chain and I was getting mailed responses from people I hadn't even written before long.My local city councilman didn;t even bother to return my calls or letters and subsequently came out against the preservation of a historic building in my hood so his developer buds can blow it up and build 20-story luxury apts. He'll soon be out on his ass.

Guest Johnny Dickshot Guests Posted February 17, 2006 Posted February 17, 2006 Yeah. I have to say, I really don't know enough to criticize the de-landmarking of the building, but Yassky argued the designation was a give-back to preservationists pissed off at losing the battle to preserve some Columbus Circle real estate and he may be right. But his strategy seemed to be convincing City Council that the building was ugly.Austin Nichols warehouse, designed by cass Gilbert, beetter known for the Woolworth Building:I'm mostly mad at Yassky for not getting back to me.

"Talks are progressing well," he said. "We are optimistic, but there is no deal in place yet."Jim Maiella, a Cablevision spokesman, would not describe the status of the negotiations, but he said officials expected to carry the Mets on opening day and beyond.SNY will start broadcasting March 16 with a Mets spring training game against the Atlanta Braves and will carry the opening-day game against the Washington Nationals on April 3.A deal with Cablevision would add its three million subscribers to the 3.1 million in the area who have been committed by Time Warner and Comcast. SNY is also in talks with the satellite operators DirecTV and Dish Network. The Mets paid Cablevision $54 million to be released from their contract with the MSG Network and Fox Sports New York after last season. Cablevision unsuccessfully sued the Mets for breach of contract and to prevent them from any planning on the new network until November 2005.Like the Mets, the Yankees left Cablevision to start their own channel, the YES Network. Cablevision refused to carry YES in 2002, arguing that it was worth far less than what was being charged. A deal brokered by the state attorney general, Eliot Spitzer, put YES on Cablevision in 2003, and a long-term contract was required by an arbitration panel.Officials have decided to place SNY at Channel 26 and move Fox Sports New York to Channel 79 on Time Warner's New York City system.Elster88 Feb 27 2006 03:16 PMEncouraging.seawolf17 Feb 27 2006 03:29 PMKeep those fingers crossed.KC Mar 16 2006 12:16 PMPretty damn annoying get one of those what seems like a daily email fromthe Mets advertising something this afternoon kicks off their new network andall of their fans aren't going to be able to watch it.Thanks, Fred.Nymr83 Mar 16 2006 02:17 PMWhat about "Thanks, Cablevision"? Previously, SNY had been available in about 3 million homes, primarily through Comcast and Time Warner, which are part owners of the network. Cablevision homes were expected to have access to SNY sometime Thursday night, when a Mets spring training game against the Marlins was to be shown. The network will be carried on Channel 60.SNY will show 125 Mets games this season.Next on SNY's agenda are the two largest satellite TV providers, DirecTV and Dish Network. MLB extra innings for free, pretty cool, today with the Mets rained out I tuned into the Giants TV home to watch them play the Braves, now it's the Rockies at the Padres, still I wouldn't pay for it, it's $150+ for the season.MFS62 Apr 15 2006 11:58 AMYAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!! I was channel surfing last night and, there it was (right where I hoped it migh be when Charter Communications moved another station to make room for it):SNY.I am happy.LaterFrayed Knot Apr 15 2006 04:35 PMSo they added the channel but apparently tried to keep it a secret from you figuring you'd eventually stumble across it accidently. And cable operators wonder why being held in high esteem continues to elude them.
Guest KC Guests Posted February 17, 2006 Posted February 17, 2006 Don't forget the rest of the areas that Cablevision serves - freaking LongIslanders think the sun rises and sets on them lol.

Guest ABG Guests Posted February 17, 2006 Posted February 17, 2006 Has anyone seen updates on their negotiations with DirectTV?
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted February 18, 2006 Posted February 18, 2006 I have Charter Cablevision.I spoke with someone there today. She said the marketing department hasn't announced yet as to whether they will be carrying that channel. If they don't, keep checking CNN. You might see a picture of a distinguished looking gentleman being led off from an ugly scene of mayhem in the back of a Police cruiser. And I don't mean Dick Cheney.Later
Guest KC Guests Posted February 27, 2006 Posted February 27, 2006 From The New York TimesBy Opening Day, Cablevision May Carry New Met NetworkBy RICHARD SANDOMIRCablevision is close to an agreement to carry the Mets' new cable network, SportsNet New York, that would allow the channel to be seen throughout the metropolitan region. But Mark Harrad, a spokesman for Time Warner Cable, which is a partner with the Mets and Comcast in the network, cautioned that nothing formal had been signed. A deal brokered by the state attorney general, Eliot Spitzer, put YES on Cablevision in 2003, and a long-term contract was required by an arbitration panel.Officials have decided to place SNY at Channel 26 and move Fox Sports New York to Channel 79 on Time Warner's New York City system.
