Jason Bay: Four years, 18.25 million.

I'd have put that as Eyre's market value. He said he wanted to move closer to his home in Florida, but New York is closer than Chicago. I think we may have blinked and missed an opportunity.

If the Pirates can't find $7.5M to pay Jason Bay in 2009, they should contract right now. I could see them dealing him if they don't think they can sign him beyond that year, but a few more years like last year and Bay will be worth twice that.

Where is Toronto getting this money? They were rumored to be making a big offer to Burnett, too.

We may have overpaid for Beltran, but the market has shifted and his deal may look better as time passes. Provided he produces, of course.

I'd love to know what the people who criticized the Dodgers for overspending last year think of this one. And where will he play? Don't they have Izturis and Kent in the middle of the infield? Christ, this is more per year than Konerko or Wagner. I don't get this one at all.

The Cards already inked Pujols to a multi-year deal - for 6 years I think - one that will take him through his remaining arb-eligible years plus the first few FA seasons. And they're probably happy they did so in the relatively "cheap" span between the free spending dot-com era leading up to about 2000 and the one MLB seems to be diving headlong into since last year.

Revenues for teams as a whole are way up right now. Rev-sharing and lux-tax money have spread the money out to more teams, satellite radio cash is starting to pour in, and the clubs are either smelling - or in some case maybe already spending - the loot from the impending sale of the Nationals who they've all been subsidizing for the last 5 years.

When you consider that Furcal - assuming that those numbers are accurate - is getting almost as much on a per/year basis as Vlad did just 2 winters ago, it's safe to say that there's money to be spent out there now.

Pujols is signed through 2010 (his 10th season), with an option for 2011. The annual price tag from 2008 on is $16M. Barring an injury, it's a bargain for the Cardinals.

Wright will be arbitration eligible after 07, and Reyes after this year. They will stop being cheap, and Beltran's contract is backloaded. The Mets still have plenty of money to spend this year, but Minaya had also better plan ahead.
