Mike Piazza: Contacted by Twins

Thursday, November 17, 2005

Minnesota has contacted Piazza about a possible free agent contract, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports. "Minnesota called me and to me there is interest in Mike," said Dan Lozano, Piazza's agent. "Minnesota definitely is a team Mike is willing to listen to. At this point, it's a little bit premature to determine what's going to happen and where Mike's going to end up."

Piazza would be a good fit for the Twins since he can DH and serve as the backup catcher, but his asking price is likely out of Minnesota's price range.

Bold italics for the Twins are a team Mike is willing to listen to?

I thought this was about a paternity suit.

No way the Twins give up draft picks . . .

If the Twins can get him cheaply enough, I think it's a great idea for them. Mauer's a stud, but they're still concerned about overplaying him. Giving him one day a week at the DH or so could help a lot, and DH'ing almost every day, I'd be Piazza could still put up an OPS in the mid .800's, which would make him significantly more productive than anyone they had last year.

Maybe a one year deal worth $7M guaranteed, with incentives to take him to $10M?

The only way we get draft picks is if we offer him arbitration. And since the least amount we could offer is $12 mil (a 25% pay cut), there is a risk that he would just accept the Mets arby offer, and not go to the Twins (or anyone else).

But if we don't offer him arby, we don't get anything back from the team that signs him.

I don't see him in any American League uniform, but it looks like I'm going to soon enough.

A post in all bald italics can be like a guy with two in him making a passionate point at a party six inches away from your nose.

Darlene Bernaola and sister trying to extort money or else Alicia Rickter will know all? At least that would put the Mike Piazza is gay rumors to rest.

I still think Mike will wind up with the Halos. They will need an experienced (at least part time) catcher if Benjie Molina signs elsewhere.

I've been in Minneapolis a few times and I love the place.

A DH who may or may not get you an OPS of .800 is not worth $7M. If Piazza gets $5M and an option for next year, his agent is really good.

Piazza put up an OPS of .842 after the All-Star break in limited duty. My guess is he'll be able to replicate or improve on that next season if he's primarily DH'ing.

You might be right about the money . . .

who is that poster that mentioned that Piazza might go for draft picks....
Piazza is a free agent. There are no draft picks involved.

Every day that the Mets are bumbling deals with a Molina or a Jojima, it would make sense to bring Mike Piazza back.

Perhaps wishful thinking.

Recap, Piazza is a Type-A free agent; if they offer him arbitration, then the Mets are entitled to draft pick compensation from any team who signs him.

And there's little evidence of bumbling.

Yes, but read my post a little up the thread that identifies the risk if they offer arbitration.
