I went for Wes Westrum because of particular animosity I had for him back then, although knowing full well that the real answer is Dallas Green.

Dallas Green. The others may have been incept, but Green supplemented his ineptitude with a knack for destroying young players' psyches and young pitchers' arms.

Oh, geez, I had blocked out all memory of Torborg.

If he were I choice, I might very well have gone with him.

Bud Harrelson was pretty bad, too.

Torborg was terrible all-around. You always felt he was being out-thought and the players didn't love him.

I think Torberg was especially poor. Had some talent, got nothing from it, didn;t get along with the players, fans or newspapermen very well.

I know its popular to bash Green for shredding young arms but just about every skipper since then has been criticzed by the same people for being too wussy to even use young guys.

And Green's memory is also clouded because he stepped down right around the time that 100+ pitch-counts became synonymous with "torture," even though in years since, BP's "pitcher abuse points" stats have been widely discredited.

I'm not saying Green deserves a total pass for bad things that happened on his watch; just that Torberg was worse and by a longshot.

Popular opinion is that Harrelson was out of his depth as manager, but he had himself a .529 winning percentage, good for third in Met history.

It was easy enough to be disappointed that his Mets weren't Davey Johnson's Mets (although they were losing for Davey at the time). They certainly didn't rebound under Harrelson's successors.

It's not like Harrelson took the job and came up with the dumb idea to replace Daryl Boston in center with Vince Coleman and Darryl Strawberry in right with Hubie Brooks.

Maybe if Casey had managed Reyes, the message of "butcher boy" (meaning chop down on the ball and run like Hell) would have sunk in. And Reyes would be the next Ichiro.

This is a tuffer call that calling the best.
I went with Green cuz he's up there, but Torborg and BuddyH are viable choices. All three had the tools with which to win, and all found new and novel ways to lose.

Bamburger was pretty bad but he didnt have much to work with.
Howe was a disappointing mismatch for NY and the Wilpons were too into the mix during those years.

Torborg and Howe are both above the guys you listed to me. they were both given alot more to work with than the guys on the list.

I'd still like to hear the explicit case for Bud Harrelson as worst.

I guess Jefferies and Magadan might not have stagnated under another manager, but I think he was largely in the wrong place at the wrong time.
