OK, now that we've established his limits, be more careful with him next year.

As far as shutting him down goes, I don't think that's proper until the Mets are mathematically out of it, unless you have evidence that it's more than just fatigue.

He wrenched his foot in May. Hence the dropping K-rate - he hasn't had a fastball for months, and it's probably gotten progressively more painful. He's kicked ass for most of the season, but between the foot and the fact he's just exhausted - remember, he's pitched into November the past two years, shutting him down wouldn't be a bad idea. Give him a break, let him go home and prepare for '06.

Considering he's been carrying an entire team on his right arm all season, that's certainly understandable.

Petey's not right and we should if not bench him give him extra rest as much as possible.

And next season, we should carry through on our plan to give him extra days off, which I believe we abandonded some time in June.

And when he gets dinged up next season, we shouldn't be afraid to drop him on the 15 day. I'd rather have him miss three starts in July than be Pedro-lite in September.

Don't get me wrong, Pedro-lite's still the best starter on our team (well, except maybe for Seo) but Pedro at moderate-to-full health is one of the best in baseball.

I started this thread, but I'm kind of shocked at all the doctor-playing.

Martinez has still been effective as heck. He has three shutout innings today with only one strikeout (maintaining his September rate).

Edge, he's not the same pitcher he was at the beginning of the season. He's working at around 84 mph, only getting it to the upper 80's in tight spots. At the same time, he's allowing more base runners both in terms of hits and walks.

In the beginning of the season, he was working in the upper 80's/low 90's regularly. Now, speed isn't everything, but a drop-off like that is ALWAYS troubling.

When I saw him in person a few weeks ago, it seemed to me like he wasn't finishing off his pitches, which could be a result of injury but is at least a sign of him being tired.

Whether or not he's injured or just tired, it's no secret that Petey does better on extra rest. It's been true for years, and we'd be wise to use that to maximize the innings we get from him.

I have no problem with Pedros loss of steam.
Im amazed how much steam he has shown thus far ,esp for the 1st half of the season.

Pedro is a 'pitcher' , and his arm getting slower at this point does not concern me.
He'll still get em out, as he has shown today.

As long as his ball has movement, Im not worried about it.

This is silly. Who cares if he pitches better on more rest or on less? The point here is to shut him down for the remainder of the season. I doubt the two extra weeks rest will make much a difference on Opening Day 2006.
