Edgy MD Site Manager Posted April 12 Posted April 12 One walk on the afternoon. Might have had a second, but Vientos had a ball four overturned into a strike three.

Not protecting Mendoza but we're always quicker to call out managers but not so quick to look at roster construction. whippoorwill and MFS62 2
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted April 12 Posted April 12 Philosophy emanates from both places. Whatever philosophy undermined Jeff McNeil, two-time batting average champion, and turned him into Jeff McNeil, utterly disposable player, presumably was understood and embraced among the front office, the manager's office, the batting coaches, and (to be fair) Jeff himself. You can change personnel over and over, and outspend most everybody, but most teams are filled with capable major league players. The difference, to a meaningful extent, is philosophy, and beliefs can be stubbornly persistent, whether it is effective or not.

Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted April 12 Posted April 12 So a lineup of the same guys, only in a different order, would have squeezed a better result out of four singles and a walk?
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted April 12 Posted April 12 Not all of the same guys. I’m talking about the roster. where was Alvarez.? later
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted April 12 Posted April 12 Sitting, as all catchers do and as he will probably twice a week. Get used to it. And Torrens had one of the hits and was robbed of a second.

Serious question: how does firing Stearns mid-season fix anything? Let alone the publicity and perception problems it creates, as well as the difficulty in hiring a replacement.

I agree midseason is not necessarily what should be done, but if things continue as they have certainly someone else in my opinion should oversee our next off season.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted April 13 Posted April 13 Well, things are certainly not going to continue as they are. All sorts of things will happen this year. Bad things, good things. Guys will heal. Other guys will hurt. Guys you never heard of will arrive. A period will pass where things are going so right that you think the Mets are touched by God. It probably won't be a defining part of the season, but it might. Births, deaths, raccoons, fights, foul language, clownish errors alternating with angelic athleticism. At the end of the day, there's a real good chance there won't be a trophy, but that's the game. You can cash in your chips now — and that's all a valid move — but then you don't get to watch tomorrow, and I'm still interested in what tomorrow brings.

I could see a situation in which Stearns is fired but there’s way too much baseball left to be played and thus this discussion is silly at this point. Stearns didn’t make Soto hurt or Lindor/Bichette bad. If those 3 players all wind up having reasonably-standard seasons for them and the team still misses the playoffs? Ok, we can talk about it then.
