Gwreck Old-Timey Member Posted April 5 Author Posted April 5 Piazza/Hoffman is correct. Agee never homered off Don Sutton.
Gwreck Old-Timey Member Posted April 5 Author Posted April 5 Kranepool (7) 1. Marichal 2. Niekro 3. Jenkins Milner (6) 1. Carlton 2. Gibson 3. Jenkins Agee (7) 1. Palmer 2. Carlton Garrett (7) 1. Jenkins Piazza (7) 1. Smoltz 2. Randy Johnson 3. Glavine 4. Maddux Swoboda (7) 1. Carlton Incorrect: Piazza/Pedro Agee/Sutton
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted April 5 Posted April 5 Tommie Agee hit 26 homers in 1969. It is likely one of those was against his division rival Bob Gibson.
Gwreck Old-Timey Member Posted April 5 Author Posted April 5 Tommie has no homers against Gibson, in 1969 or otherwise.
The Hot Corner Old-Timey Member Posted April 5 Posted April 5 Wayne Garrett went deep in the 1973 World Series. Since Jim "Catfish" Hunter is the only HOF in the A's rotation, I'm going to guess Garrett got to Catfish.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted April 5 Posted April 5 Kranepool came into games late in the tail-end of the 1970s. You know who else was entering games late at that time? A young Cub with a Hall-of-Fame future named Bruce Sutter.
Gwreck Old-Timey Member Posted April 6 Author Posted April 6 Kranepool (7) 1. Marichal 2. Niekro 3. Jenkins Milner (6) 1. Carlton 2. Gibson 3. Jenkins 4. Niekro 5. Marichal Agee (7) 1. Palmer 2. Carlton 3. Jenkins 4. Niekro 5. Marichal Garrett (7) 1. Jenkins 2. Hunter 3. Niekro 4. Marichal Piazza (7) 1. Smoltz 2. Randy Johnson 3. Glavine 4. Maddux 5. Hoffman Swoboda (7) 1. Carlton 2. Jenkins 3. Niekro 4. Marichal Incorrect: Piazza/Pedro Agee/Sutton Piazza/Sabathia Piazza/Eckersley Agee/Gibson Sutter/Kranepool I filled in Jenkins, Marichal, and Niekro for everyone since they're correct answers for everyone other than Piazza.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted April 6 Posted April 6 Nice. You shook down all the low hanging fruit. With all of those gone, only longshots remain, so Imma guess really young Ed Kranepool got some licks in on really old Warren Spahn, long about 1964.

The Hot Corner Old-Timey Member Posted April 6 Posted April 6 Okay shot in the dark. Just matching Mets hitters against HOF pitchers of the same era that haven't been matched up yet. I will go with Ron Swoboda against Sandy Koufax. If allowed a second guess in a single post, give me Swoboda against Don Drysdale.
Gwreck Old-Timey Member Posted April 6 Author Posted April 6 Those three are all correct. I’ve also added Gibson, Carlton, Sutton, and Bunning to the players who have them (since multiple guys got each pitcher). Takeaway: if a pitcher’s been guessed, he shows up here. But there are still a few tough answers out there. Kranepool (7) 1. Marichal 2. Niekro 3. Jenkins 4. Bunning 5. Gibson Milner (6) 1. Carlton 2. Gibson 3. Jenkins 4. Niekro 5. Marichal 6. Sutton Agee (7) 1. Palmer 2. Carlton 3. Jenkins 4. Niekro 5. Marichal 6. Bunning Garrett (7) 1. Jenkins 2. Hunter 3. Niekro 4. Marichal 5. Gibson 6. Sutton Piazza (7) 1. Smoltz 2. Randy Johnson 3. Glavine 4. Maddux 5. Hoffman Swoboda (7) 1. Carlton 2. Jenkins 3. Niekro 4. Marichal 5. Koufax 6. Drysdale Incorrect: Pedro Martinez Sabathia Eckersely Sutter

Edgy MD Site Manager Posted April 6 Posted April 6 Oh, and Kranepool/Blyleven. Bert only had a short stint in the National League at the tail end of Kranepool's career, and he was really good at the time. But he was also particularly prone to the homer for a Hall-of-Fame pitcher.
Gwreck Old-Timey Member Posted April 6 Author Posted April 6 Good answers here. Piazza got Halladay in June 1999, Halladay’s rookie year. Kranepool’s final homer of his career was off Blyleven in September 1979, during Bert’s brief stint in the National League. 3 more total pitchers on the the board. Kranepool (7) 1. Marichal 2. Niekro 3. Jenkins 4. Bunning 5. Gibson 6. Blyleven Milner (6) 1. Carlton 2. Gibson 3. Jenkins 4. Niekro 5. Marichal 6. Sutton Agee (7) 1. Palmer 2. Carlton 3. Jenkins 4. Niekro 5. Marichal 6. Bunning Garrett (7) 1. Jenkins 2. Hunter 3. Niekro 4. Marichal 5. Gibson 6. Sutton Piazza (7) 1. Smoltz 2. Randy Johnson 3. Glavine 4. Maddux 5. Hoffman 6. Halladay Swoboda (7) 1. Carlton 2. Jenkins 3. Niekro 4. Marichal 5. Koufax 6. Drysdale Incorrect: Pedro Martinez Sabathia Eckersely Sutter Seaver
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted April 6 Posted April 6 It looks like this is now about guessing the pitchers, independent of the hitters. Is one of the three remaining pitchers... Gaylord Perry?
Gwreck Old-Timey Member Posted April 6 Author Posted April 6 Yeah, it was seeming too cumbersome with having to guess Jenkins or Marichal or Carlton for each of six different guys. Perry is correct: Agee, Kranepool, and Swoboda all got him. Two answers left: one for Piazza, one for Garrett.
The Hot Corner Old-Timey Member Posted April 7 Posted April 7 Piazza against Roger Clemens. I can't believe none of us recalled this given their history.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted April 7 Posted April 7 Clemens isn't in the Hall. The Hot Corner 1
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted April 7 Posted April 7 17 minutes ago, Benjamin Grimm said: Clemens isn't in the Hall. Well, he may be in A hall. But you know who is in THE Hall? Warren Spahn is. And his crappy 1964 intersected with Ed Kranepool's first year with double-digit homers.
The Hot Corner Old-Timey Member Posted April 7 Posted April 7 Damn, I forgot that he has been denied for having used inappropriate rocket fuel. I am actually, glad to be incorrect on this one.
Gwreck Old-Timey Member Posted April 7 Author Posted April 7 Spahn did give up a few homers to the Mets - including to Al Jackson - but not to the players here.

Then clearly, Kranepool caught up with Rich Gossage during that awesome year Goose had with Pittsburgh before joining the Yankees. (I'm really stinking this kwiz up.)
Zach Thornton Syracuse Mets - AAA LHP On Sunday, the southpaw tossed five shutout innings as the bulk pitcher. He gave up 2 hits, walked 2 and had 5 strikeouts. Explore Zach Thornton News >
