One takeaway from this kwizzicle is to underscore how notably few Hall of Fame starting pitchers the 80s produced.

And one Hall-of-Famer who did peak in that era — Jack Morris — made it despite not having the strongest case.

Hoyt Wilhelm?

Wayne Garrett hit a walk-off homer off Wilhelm on September 28, 1970 in the bottom of the 12th inning.  It was the only homer he ever allowed to a Met.  Could you name the team Wilhem was pitching for?  I could not before doing this Quiz.

Best starting pitchers (using BBREF’s JAWS ranking) to debut between 1970 and 1985:

Clemens

Blyleven

Rick Reuschel

Brett Saberhagen

Dave Stieb

Orel Hershisher

Frank Tanana

Mark Langston

Frank Viola

Jimmy Key

Lee Smith stuck around long enough to get tagged by Piazza.

(So did Gossage, but he is off the hook.)

Wagner is correct for the last Piazza answer.  I was a little surprised he never got Mussina.

Was Wilhelm with the Dodgers? I have a 1972 Topps card of Hoyt Wilhelm as a Dodger.

It was the Cubs.  One of Wilhelm’s 3 games with Chicago.
