mlb.tv has been giving me some bizarre ads for a product called Kalshi.  None of these ads made any sense and I had no idea what I was being sold.

So, I looked them up and learned they were an online prediction gambling company, and the ads still don't make any sense and I still don't really get what I'm being sold.

I took was confused and had to look it up to see what the ad was selling.  As I type this, another vague and confusing ad for Kalshi came on.

I suspect Kalshi thinks that the cool people already know what it is, so it's not a commercial for product introduction so much as it is selling it to those who simply haven't taken the plunge yet.  And if nothing else they got a couple of guys to look up what their business is so it works for them there too.

Not a TV commercial, but an ad on this site for Cabela's (an outdoor chain) is featuring their 'bargain' price for fishing reels -- not the pole, just the reel itself -- for $1,000 and up.

I just realized that one of those three guys dicking around on keyboards in the Kalshi ad is Timothee Chalomet, which means that nonsense cost them some serious $$.

This really makes me respect the ad firm who came up with Limu and Doug.

I know we're not supposed to fat-shame people (nor do I want to) but I do want to start shaming the awful commercials  for meds designed to slim down overweight folks. The whole concept of marketing meds directly to people even though they can't buy them on their own is kind of weird to begin with. Doing so with hokey/bad taste ones just ups that ante a few notches.

We now have TV ads for prescription meds with the designed purpose of combatting side effects from other prescription meds ... probably ones that are being advertised on the same programs.

Remember when nobody bought the Chevy NOVA in Latin America because nova means "doesn't go"?

I  saw an ad for a drug called Icotide (for skin problems?) that I don't think will sell well in Japan. It is pronounced very close to a Japanese word that roughly translates into "are you kidding?" and can also be used as an epithtet.

That "no va" thing is mostly a myth.  As a Romance language, Spanish includes nova as a distinct word, mostly used the same way it is used in English, to refer to a new star.  The car sold well in Mexico and points south.

Va is the third person singular conjugation of the verb  ir which  means to go. Therefore no va means doesn’t go. 
and if a myth, why is this discussed in college business/ marketing classes?

I didn't write that "No va" doesn't mean "doesn't go." I wrote that "Nova" is a word with a distinct meaning in Spanish that is pretty much the same meaning it has in English.

I don't know what classes you are referring to, but I imagine myths such as this one are discussed in a lot of classes.

So NOVIG is a "Prediction Markets for Sports". Nice to see that they've yet to run out of attempts to describe gambling as anything other than gambling. It's the 'gaming' industry. And, remember, your state provides you with the 'Education Lottery' so it's really a way to educate your children rather than a method to separate you from your money at a 50% clip.
