I'm not sure that Wheeler was a franchise icon, but yeah, I get the larger point. You'd think having two longtime Mets fans running the team that they'd be more conscious of this. They say they are, but recent evidence suggests otherwise.

I can be pretty forgiving if there’s a World Series title around these parts.

If it’s an 85 win, #6 seed if we get lucky team…not so much.

In a vacuum, any one departure would have been fine, but 3 icons leaving in the same offseason is extraordinarily tough to bear, and I agree that it’s not at all clear that factor has been sufficiently considered.

 

Agree. It's World Series or bust. If they don't win it all, none of this will have been worth it.

 

I need a sustained run of World Series wins to slake my bloodthirst this afternoon.

I can't get mad about not getting Alonso. That is two years and $75M more than I'd have willingly given him.

But that being said, Stearns had better have a plan.

Plenty of longtime Mets fans would (and regularly and loudly announce as such) that they would dump most of those guys and more, certain that they are that they could intelligently move forward otherwise.

I am not such a fan, but I encounter them oft enough.

Me — I'm still fighting a lost fight for Jose Iglesias in 2024 while they are throwing Nimmo over in 2025.

The Mets literally could have shelled out $200 million over 5 years to save the current face of the franchise and it would have looked like a good deal. That Pete was willing to settle for five years shows the Mets blew it on this one. The money wasn't the issue with Pete, it was the potential of him asking for a 10-year deal. Big guys like that break down fast when the collapse starts and 10 years would've been too much. But any team can weather five years of a fading former star.

They dropped the ball on this one. After last year's tumultuous offseason involving Pete, you kind of knew he wasn't going to stay, but still.

I am prepared to judge these moves "in the round" when all is said and done.

The time to lock Pete Alonso was after year 2/3 of his big league adventure. He's the classic guy who if you'd bought out 2/3 years then you'd have done well - older college bat with old player skills- his free agency is always going to stray into the 'he could fall off a cliff' terriory Easy to say it now, but pre 2022 season going for something along the lines of 6*14 or so might have done it.

Even last years deal was an overpay for what he brings to the table, but short-term it was fine, but years 3-5 of this one is going to be a 2win player who's costing a load of money and being league averageish.

If we accept that MLB's penalisation of spending on players above a certain level does make everyone have limitations on their outlay, I definitely can accept that there were better ways of spending the $.
