Here we go

Field Operations

Mets owner Steve Cohen’s quest to land a casino has paid off, as Cohen and Hard Rock International were awarded a N.Y. downstate casino license by the NYS Gaming Facility Location Board on Monday.

The $8.1B Metropolitan Park project adjacent to Citi Field is projected to be finished in June 2030. Metropolitan Park, on 50 acres of Citi Field parking lots, will include a Hard Rock Hotel with a casino, sportsbook, restaurants, bars, a 5,650-seat music venue and a Taste of Queens Food Hall. It will also create 25 acres of public green space, 23,000 union jobs, $1B in community benefits and infrastructure improvements including a revamped, ADA-accessible 7-line train station.

It’s not as if driving/parking at Citi is already a pleasant experience. Anyway, I highly doubt they’re going to remove all the parking. From what I saw, the plan includes garages to increase parking capacity on the smaller footprint.

I have the driving to Citi thing figured out. I park under the Northern Boulevard overpass. So far I've always been able to get one of the few remaining spots. Parking there allows for an easy exit after the game. I head toward Main Street and then south to the LIE. I once parked in the garage at Yankee Stadium, on the day that Tom Seaver won his 300th game. It took forever to get out of that garage with everyone leaving at the same time. I'd rather park five miles away and get a subway or an Uber to and from the stadium.

Do we know how tall that Hard Rock hotel will be?

I'd guess a tall building there will mean LaGuardia will have to alter at least one flight path, like they had to do with the 20+ story apartments across the street when I lived near Main St. Flushing.

I'm not into gambling, and don't think I have ever been to a casino, but I'm looking forward to seeing what this becomes, public transportation will be key

It is interesting and depressing to see the twin American wonders of baseball and rock 'n' roll made low by the same forces.

parking will suck...by design.

"Hmm, should I sit in this mess or kill an hour or two in the casino?"

That was the allure of McFaddens, until it became tourist trap for sports bar loving fanboys.

Just be glad a huge guitar structure, like the one in South Florida, isn’t in the plans!

BTW, at night laser light beams shoot up to create a illuminated, elongated neck

I can't imagine a brand of tourism that includes McFadden's.

"We have come all the way from Topeka! From Glascow! From Seoul! But our time in New York will be for naught if we don't see McFadden's!"

Confusing it with McSorley’s?

FWIW, the Citi Field location was part of a sports bar expansion effort that included Philly, Pittsburgh, Nashville, etc.

All, except for Pittsburgh shuttered around the time the original, by Grand Central in midtown Manhattan, abruptly closed.

Tourist Trap was more along the lines of “oh, its a sports bar trying to be an “authentic Irish Tavern/Gastropub,” and its walking distance from the sports and performance venue arena(s)”

Not necessarily in terms of the branding being “must go to this famous noted restaurant/club/bar/etc when in town.”
