Edgy MD Site Manager Posted July 30, 2025 Posted July 30, 2025 Righty relieving submariner, we just saw in San Francisco, reportedly acquired for compensation not yet disclosed. Not to be confused with twin brother Taylor, currently lefthanding for Cincinnati. (On edit: Taylor has apparently also been traded, going to Pittsburgh in the KeBryan Hayes trade.Among Met pitchers, probably only Chad Bradford brought it from lower. He has a 1.80 ERA and a walk rate so low that the Mets might have to ostracize him.
Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2025 Posted July 30, 2025 This guy is good. Interesting get
Gwreck Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2025 Posted July 30, 2025 Led NL in games pitched in 2020, 2021, 2024 and currently leading in 2035.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2025 Posted July 30, 2025 Yeah. I'm on the edge of my seat waiting for the "for whom" part. Neither Vientos nor Baty have been pulled from today's game, so it's probably not either of them.My guess is it will be someone from Syracuse or Binghamton.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2025 Posted July 30, 2025 Butto, Gilbert, and Tidwell, says Gary.
Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2025 Posted July 30, 2025 holy **** we gave up a lot
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted July 30, 2025 Author Posted July 30, 2025 I liked that the Mets loosened the San Francisco hold on him by sweeping the Giants.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted July 30, 2025 Author Posted July 30, 2025 Butto, Gilbert, and Tidwell, says Gary. Whoah. Did we acquire Tyler Rogers Hornsby?
Gwreck Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2025 Posted July 30, 2025 That’s a hefty price for a guy who’s a FA at the end of the year.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2025 Posted July 30, 2025 For that price we should get Tyler AND Taylor!
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2025 Posted July 30, 2025 Seems like a lot to me, too. Of the three, I most regret losing Gilbert.
Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2025 Posted July 30, 2025 That’s a hefty price for a guy who’s a FA at the end of the year. I wouldn't pay that much for Steve J. Rogers
Cowtipper Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2025 Posted July 30, 2025 An actually truly good pitching move. This ain't no Huascar Brazoban, this is a David Robertson. He's really good. If he pitches as well as Chad Bradford, I'll give him three thumbs up.Only one I don't like to see go is Butto. The others, adios!
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2025 Posted July 30, 2025 I wonder if this will prompt the Mets to give Jett Williams more outfield time?
The Hot Corner Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2025 Posted July 30, 2025 Definitely gave up quite a bit for a free agent in waiting. Rogers is an upgrade over Butto and has been a durable reliever, but this seems a win now move. I don't mind losing Tidwell and Butto, but Gilbert has been really tearing it up of late. And the Mets need all the help they can get in CF.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2025 Posted July 30, 2025 (edited) The classic Doyle Alexander (short term help) for John Smoltz (long term help) deal.Butto seems to not have regained his old form, Gilbert hasn't progressed as well as they hoped and has been surpassed as a cf prospect by Benge(and Williams), and I had Tidwell going as part of a trade for Roberts in another thread. So, give them a hug, but don't mourn. Just root for Tyler Rogers.Later Edited July 30, 2025 by MFS62
Cowtipper Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2025 Posted July 30, 2025 Whatever it does, it helps clear up the prospect backlog. I was getting worried the Verlander trade was going to be a dud, as Gilbert—the big name in the deal—hasn't wowed in the minors these past two years and he's pushing 25 and out of prospect territory. Tidwell on feel alone gives me Thomas Szapucki vibes—a reasonably high pick who gets mentioned as a prospect, but really doesn't quite have it. So really, all we gave up of any true value right now is Butto, but even he's not been stellar (106 ERA+) this year.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2025 Posted July 30, 2025 Thomas Szapucki vibes—a reasonably high pick who gets mentioned as a prospect, but really doesn't quite have it. He "had it". He just has been injured often, so never had much of a chance to show it.Later
Cowtipper Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2025 Posted July 30, 2025 So an injured player doesn't have it, because health is part of 'it.' Every player ever has it if you make excuses for why they're not good.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted July 30, 2025 Author Posted July 30, 2025 Every player has 'it' if you don't define what 'it' is.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2025 Posted July 30, 2025 53 G, 50 IPThose are the kinds of numbers we used to associate (before the rule changes)with a LOOGY.He really must be a specialist.Later
Cowtipper Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2025 Posted July 30, 2025 He inspires the short-season hope in me Tyler Clippard did (before Clippard fell apart). It was bringing on late-season relief help that helped catapult the Mets in 2015; I hope it happens here.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2025 Posted July 30, 2025 Maybe they can also get a Yoenis Cespedes.
Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2025 Posted July 30, 2025 Maybe they can also get a Yoenis Cespedes. That's what they really need, especially lately. They need a couple of hitters
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted July 30, 2025 Author Posted July 30, 2025 What sealed the Céspedes trade was his willingness to play center when center was what the Mets needed.Maychance Yo-Yo wants to come out of his unofficial retirement.
Cowtipper Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2025 Posted July 30, 2025 Maybe they can also get a Yoenis Cespedes. Name doesn't ring a bell. But it sounds Cuban, and Randy Arozarena is a decent Cuban ballplayer who might help. I'd give up former top prospects Mark Vientos and Brett Baty for him.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2025 Posted July 30, 2025 Can Tyler Rogers hit? (grasping at straws here)Later
roger_that Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2025 Posted July 30, 2025 I thought I heard Gary say that Gilbert won't make a MLB roster for a couple of years, which kind of wrecks his "prospect" status, don't it? I mean, if he's 25 now, and won't break in until he's 27, that's more than a late start. I can't remember the last guy who broke in at 27 and had a significant MLB career. Are my numbers right? Does anyone think this deal points to the Mets' determination to pick up a major CFer in the near future?
Gwreck Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2025 Posted July 30, 2025 Gilbert turns 25 in September and is now in his second year at AAA, with a .785 OPS in 81 games. He probably could be in the majors now or next year. He is subject to the Rule 5 draft in the offseason too if he’s not added to the 40 man roster.
