smg58 Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2025 Posted July 30, 2025 Pros: I love Rogers and I think he's the perfect eighth-inning complement to Diaz.Cons: He's only been worth 0.4 WAR more than Buttó, per Fangraphs, and winning playoff teams need deep bullpens (especially now), not just top-heavy ones. Plus I think optionable arms who still have a chance of developing into something are being undervalued by Stearns. Mike Vasil won't get sent back to us. Yeah Tidwell's AAA numbers weren't pretty, but Buttó and Nuñez didn't shine at Syracuse either.I'd have been great with trading Gilbert for Rogers straight up. But I probably would have worked something out that wouldn't have us looking for more pitchers tomorrow and this offseason.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted July 30, 2025 Author Posted July 30, 2025 WAR is limited, but probably has the least utility when comparing relievers.
The Hot Corner Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2025 Posted July 30, 2025 (edited) I thought I heard Gary say that Gilbert won't make a MLB roster for a couple of years, which kind of wrecks his "prospect" status, don't it? I mean, if he's 25 now, and won't break in until he's 27, that's more than a late start. I can't remember the last guy who broke in at 27 and had a significant MLB career. Are my numbers right? Does anyone think this deal points to the Mets' determination to pick up a major CFer in the near future? Jacob DeGrom was a late bloomer that did pretty well. He made his MLB debut at 25 years and 11 months of age (not quite 27 but just off the top of my head). Edited July 30, 2025 by The Hot Corner
ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2025 Posted July 30, 2025 I thought all of this was for the Orioles starter

The guy has spent the whole year (apart from some injury and rehab time) at AAA and is doing well (currently very well), so I don't agree with Cohen here. He could have been up in a few weeks. Maybe sooner for the Giants. And he won't be 25 until after the season.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2025 Posted July 30, 2025 DiComo Why were the Mets willing to give up three notable pieces for a rental reliever in Tyler Rogers? A few reasons, canvassed from talking to various folks around the league:Rogers is really, really good and gives the club a different look out of the bullpen. He throws from a super unique arm angle, which is an asset in October. He's also extremely durable and, unlike most Mets relievers, is stingy with walks. A championship-caliber armAlthough the Mets gave up three players, none have massive ceilings. The Giants could possibly stretch Buttó back out in the future, which might enhance his future value. He does have five years of team control left. But his walk rate has held him back thus far in his careerScouts see Gilbert as a toolsy player who could become a steady regular, but not likely more than that. There are durability concerns there.Tidwell likewise still must prove that he's a starter -- not a reliever -- at the highest level. He hasn't done that yet.None of this is to intimate that the cost to acquire Rogers was cheap. It wasn't. But the price for high-impact pitching is always steep and seems especially so this year.At the end of the day, the Mets improved themselves without sacrificing the best of their farm system.
