Whatever Cohen dreamed his regime would be, it’s been the opposite. They also won 101 games in 2022 and then made the NLCS in 2024? When a once-in-generation-talent hit free agency the Mets had the financial wherewithal to make him a Met? Obviously this season is an abysmal failure and followed a disappointing 2025 but 2 good years out of 6 is still a much higher ratio than any of us have been used to. The team has had massive increases in payroll; supposedly they have made big investments to upgrade scouting, development, and analysis; there’s been a concerted effort to embrace players’ families to make the Mets a desired destination; and the giant scoreboard is the single most important upgrade to the ballpark experience in the 17 seasons the place has been open. Sure, a lot has gone wrong. Maybe hiring Steaens will turn out to be a horrible misstep by Cohen (if this isn’t the nadir of his tenure, we’re in trouble). But overall the long-term outlook is still trending positive.
