The hot Mets [9 - 3] welcome the ever hotter Padres [ 17 - 5] for a three game series Monday (7:10) Tuesday (7:10) and Wednesday (1:10)

The Pads started Sunday in a three-way dead heat with Philly and Arizona for the 2nd & 3rd WC slots. Disappointments early on (were below .500 as recently as late July) their high-priced but underachieving offensive talent has mostly caught fire lately [Tatis, Merrill, Machado] and they added hurlers Robbie Ray and Casey Mize (from the Giants and Tigers respectively) to their staff. We'll see Ray on Tuesday but will miss Mize.

Ex-Dodger Walker Buehler [7 - 5; 4.88; 1.43] gets the start Monday against Nolan McLean. The game plan is simple: avoid seeing super-closer Mason Miller

Mason Miller last pitched one inning of relief on August 12th, so he is well rested.  Hopefully, the only way the Mets see Miller is if he just needs to get some work in with the Mets already leading.

Hearing the name of Mason Miller always puts me in mind of the nutty 19th Century New England Baptist preacher and active Mason, William Miller.

Mason Miller always looked like he was holding in a Masonic fart.

The Friars dragged their sandals posting tonight's lineup, but it looks like they are ready to go.

Good news: We're winning

Not so good: McLean has faced seven hitters and retired one of them - and that one caught him more than the other way around

Eleven Padre batters, nine have reached base*, but just one run**.

* Line-out - Single - Single - Single (9 - 2) - Single (9 - 2) / BB - HBP - BB - FC (1 - 2) - Sac Fly - Single (7 - 2)

**  and if McLean had made a better throw he'd still have a shutout going

Lindor could've scored on that swinging bunt.  He can follow the thirdbaseman down the line and the shortstop wasn't in position to sneak in behind him because he was playing up the middle against Benji.

I'm always surprised to see Pintaro warming up in close games.  He feels like the last guy in the pen to me.

Big benchpressy chest, though.

Part of the reason I always think it’s a good idea to sign Walker Buehler is that he pitches well every time I see him.

And must suck all other times.
