You could see Mendoza giving Peterson an animated pep talk and not shaking his hand to acknowledge his coming out to pitch the eighth

With that background I'm surprised Peterson was pulled so quickly

Did Mendoza really go to Ryne Stanek with Reed Garret and Diaz available? And Peterson only at 90 pitches? Fucking awful. Did he not see what he looked like in his last appearance?

The second inning to Zach Pop. Pitching to Judge. Stanek here. Some real shit decisions by Mendoza recently.

Orioles sat both O'Hearn and Henderson, their two best hitters in this game, so it couldn't have possibly been a surprise that they might be called upon to pinch hit with the Orioles down a run in the 8th and the bottom of their order coming up.

And - I'm sure the Mets know this — both of those guys hit left-handed!

Peterson was at 90 pitches and he's going to get at least 7 days rest before his next start given the All Star break.

So wtf happened?

Also: we can't keep running out a lineup where 5-9 is a black hole of nothingness with the offense.

Gilbert + one of Acuna/Baty/Vientos/Mauricio + a pitching prospect (don't care if it's one of the good ones) to the Twins for Byron Buxton please.

Well, 5-through-9 in the order gave them three of their five hits, their only run, their only RBI, their only extra-base hit, and their only stolen base.

They have to own that output together.

No disagreement that today's game was a teamwide failure of offense. No matter how good Soto, Lindor, and Alonso are, they too will have some bad games.

But we must also acknowledge the reality that the Mets are getting no meaningful offense from catcher, third base, and wherever McNeil's not playing (second/left).

Another wasted effort for Peterson.

Seems he's inherited the "They can't friggin' score for me no matter how well I pitch" roster spot, previously held by Jacob DeGrom .

It seems that they (and I don't know if 'they' means Mendy or someone(s) above him) pre-decide to leave the starter in to start an inning but then take him out

as soon as the first hitter gets on base (as they did with Peterson tonight) or not. But it seems like they did. When they pulled Peterson it was the bottom of the

order coming up and the O's had a slew of LH batters on their bench. Peterson, even a tiring one throwing pitches 90-100+, felt like a MUCH better bet than did

any RH'er you'd bring in with a conga line of Bal'mer LHB's available to PH.

It just didn't make sense. If you bring in a righty the O's would obviously go to Gunnar Henderson et al and negate whatever advantage you thought you were

getting. And, if you want to stick with a lefty for that same reason, who in the current pen is a better LH option than D. P.? I'll answer that, NOBODY!

And if you know you're starting the taxi squad in Game 2 you have to throw your best. Which as you state, is Peterson.

And if not, then go to Garrett or Diaz.

No one looked worse this weekend than Stanek other than Zach Pop.
