Final 'Subway Series' game of the year ... unless there's one of those World Series things later on.

1:40 start, SNY. Be there or be square and, as always, those who are late do not get fruit cup.

Currently Mets 3 - Yanx 2 which pretty much says you need to know about how nice it would be to take this one.

The pitching matchup is decidedly NOT going to be in our favor [Max Fried vs Pick-out-of-a-hat] but it hasn't been in our favor in at least three of the previous

four games either and yet we've managed to score 28 runs [7 - 3 - 6 - 12] over those four games while allowing only 16 so put that in your pipe and smoke it.

Chris Devenski will be tomorrow's opener against the Yankees, the Mets announced. The plan is for Brandon Waddell to follow as the bulk guy.

On July 6, 2006, the Mets — two weeks from being dubbed "Rip City" on the cover of Sports Illustrrated — were hosting a Pirates team with a lot of guys you don't associate with the Pirates. Burnitz, Casey, Randa, ... .The Pirates at the time had a strategy of being the last team in the free agency market, signing the best remaining starting-quality guy to a one-year deal. This would help them round out a lineup of young hopefuls with an experienced big-leaguer to help keep the team competitive during growing-pain periods, while simultaneously giving them a trading chip at the deadline if said guy stays healthy and has a decent year.

They are kind of doing the same thing now with Tommy Pham, and it is clearly a hit-and-miss approach.

Mets rightfielder Xavier Nady would go to the Buccos at the end of the month for Roberto Hernandez and Oliver Peréz.

The Mets would take this game, 7-5, with David Wright's 19th homer serving as the big blow. Eli Marrero would get his only Mets start in center and play the whole game. Eli had come to the Mets a month earlier from Colorado as the return when the team dumped Kaz Matsui to the Rockies. He was primarily a catcher (and a good one), but problems with his pituitary gland (he didn't have one) were bringing his days behind the plate to an end by the time he came to the Mets. Always a terrific athlete (uncle to big leaguer Chris Marrero and blink-and-you-miss-him 2022 Met Deven Marrero), he was still a capable outfielder, but his bat didn't really play there, and the Mets released him shortly after the trade deadline.

But hey, for one day, he was playing nine innings for the same team and in the same center field that Willie Mays once called home.

The magical season of 2006 would go on to end like so many good things do — cursed to their doom by future president Donald Trump.

From Jim Brosnan's book, tell the outfielders to "play deep and cut across".

Nimmo is hitting .313/.365/.569 with 10 home runs and 25 RBI since May 26.

Alonso is hitting .302/.377/.569 with 8 home runs and 27 RBI since June 3.

Soto is hitting .342/.483/.728 with 13 home runs and 26 RBI since May 30 (and over .350 since early June).

Now the offense is starting to crank, so the pitching is struggling. If they mesh, this team will be unstoppable.

The magic number is down to 74, so even in the struggles, it's still getting better.

They must go 38-34 from here on out to be a 90-win team.

Here is your more current, Marrero-free, lineup.

Strange times we find ourselves in when two high-profile contenders find themselves in a Sunday afternoon marquee matchup, and one team is leading off with a 37-year-old firstbaseman, and the other with an oft-repaired 36-year-old designated hitter

After Goldschmidt's rather sudden plummet over the past two seasons [OPS+ from 177 to 120 to 98] one wonders whether his hot start this season was less a late career (age 37 season) resurgence and more akin to a dead cat bounce.

April OPS = 878

May = 904

June = 464
