Cowtipper Old-Timey Member Posted June 23, 2025 Posted June 23, 2025 The Mets have signed Richard Lovelady, the owner of a career 5.26 ERA, to shore up their floundering bullpen.https://www.mlb.com/news/richard-lovelady-deal-with-metshttps://www.mlb.com/news/richard-lovelady-deal-with-mets
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted June 23, 2025 Posted June 23, 2025 Scarier is the fact that Stearns said last week in a presser that he would be inclined to use the team's pitching prospects to help acquire bullpen help and an outfielder. If he's going to spend that capital and get back players like this, I'm not sure that's the right approach. If the young pitchers are that good, why not bring them up and give them a shot?Later
kcmets Old-Timey Member Posted June 23, 2025 Posted June 23, 2025 I'm not an expert, well maybe three-quarters of an expert, but Dick Lovelady has to be the porniest Mets name ever.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted June 23, 2025 Posted June 23, 2025 That's a big-league deal complete with a spot on the big-league roster.I am not sure why it would be considered scary.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted June 23, 2025 Posted June 23, 2025 For those asking, yes, new Mets reliever Richard Lovelady has requested to go by his nickname Dicky. So it will be Dicky Lovelady from here on out.DiComo

How bad would the rest of the bullen have to be for that to be an improvement? I know 5.27 ERA, but that's scary. A team that's in contention should be looking at pitchers with ERAs at least 2.0 lower.Later

These are the guys available as free agents in June, and if your judgment is good, some of them work out.Sometimes, a guy's most recent MLB performance is not his destiny. José Castillo had a 5.21 career ERA when the Mets acquired him, and an 11.37 mark in 2025. With the Mets, his ERA has been 0.79 in 11 1/3 innings. I'm glad they weren't scared to give the guy a shot when their scouts recommended him. Then there is R.A. Dickey.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted June 23, 2025 Posted June 23, 2025 Time will tell.I hope I'm pleasantly surprised.Later
