Some division rivals were busy last night as the Marlins traded Juan Lazardo to the Phillies for SS Starlyn Caba (the team's #4 prospect according to mlb.com, but a couple of years away) and OF Emaarion Boyd (#23 and two years away).

Crap! I would have liked Pederson as the lefty DH spot.

even if they re-sign Pete (knocking wood) they will still need to upgrade the lower part of the order.

Gleyber Torres - one year $15 million with Tigers. (Detroit, not Hanshin)

That's a good value play for the Tigers, but the articles I've read on this are all criticizing them for not going for it more this offseason.

Teoscar has had nearly identical value to Alonso over the last four seasons. So while Alonso could ask for a little bit more than that on account of being two years younger, he couldn't (or at least shouldn't) ask for a lot more.

Good job by the D-Backs of sneaking in and getting the Scottsdale native.

Nats re-sign first baseman Josh Bell.

One year deal.

Another one bites the dust.

Los Angeles (N) has agreed to terms with utility player Hyeseong Kim on a three-year contract for $12.5 million with a two-year club option for 2028 and 2029.

The 25-year-old Kim, who has played the past six seasons with the KBO's Kiwoom Heroes, was the first player from South Korea and Japan to be posted this offseason and has been training in Los Angeles for the past month.

That's a mighty old arm, but he's probably made as many starts as anybody over the last six years.

He may be the new Bartolo.

A move which allows the Dodgers to then deal IF, and one-time top prospect, Gavin Lux to the Reds for a competitive balance draft pick and an OF prospect.

They have to re-think the rules about competitive balance picks. LA won the fucking world series. What more "competitive balance" do they need?

If you're going to have them in the first place (isn't that what the drafts are for?) there has to be a limit on how they're used (e.g.- you can only trade them to a sub-.500 team).

The 'Competitive Balance' picks are awarded to lower revenue teams and are the only type of pick that can be traded.

So if the Reds chose to give up the pick in lieu of another player in order to complete the deal for Lux then it's their call.

I understand what they're for, and why.

The Mets even took advantage of a competitive balance draft (although it wasn't called that) when they got Jack Fisher because the league had rachmunus on them.

And Cincy must believe that the player they got will be better than anyone they might draft. But I don't think its is right to be able to trade those picks to a plus .500 team. (Maybe I'm just pissed because LA got it.)

It's a future pick instead of a player who had previously been picked (or signed). I don't see how one is any more fair/moral than the other.

I agree. The Reds were given a competitive balance pick to use as they see fit to improve their organization. To prevent them from using it to make trades with the teams that have the most talent wouldn't make sense.

Posted

Or just bag the draft altogether.

But no, of course you shouldn't prevent Cincinnati and LA from making the trade based on the notion that the Dodgers are too good.

I know. But it just irritated my sense of fairness when I read about it- the rich get richer.

Every team trades with the thought that what they got back is better than what they gave up.

They have to think they did.

Lest we forget, Lux is a former 1st round draft pick (20th overall) who was one of the top prospects in baseball (#2 mlb.com, #3 Baseball Prospectus, #4 Baseball America) going into the 2020 season. Has he lived up to all that? No, but that doesn't mean he never will. He came into 2024 without a set position (LAD used him at SS, 2B, 3B, LF, and CF) or an everyday job after missing all of 2023 with an injury.

But he also just turned 27 y/o so maybe the Reds will hand him a steady slot and reap the benefits of getting him at the right time.
