The first round of the tenth annual Tabloid Cover Derby will open on Friday, November 1.



We currently have 249 covers in the competition: 92 from Newsday, 86 from the Daily News, and 71 from the New York Post. These numbers are expected to climb a bit, with the inclusion of any offseason covers that may accumulate before the final poll of the first round is posted.



There will be at least 25 polls in the first round.



The counts are actually low for a season in which the Mets went deep into the postseason. This is largely because the Mets only appeared on two covers during the first 25 days of May, as they appeared to be irrelevant and also because of the extended playoff runs of the Knicks and Rangers.



As always, the winning cover will be displayed proudly in the lobby of the CPF's international headquarters in Stockholm, Sweden.

I confess to using AI to generate headlines.



It's bad. It lets AI in on my style, but can be useful in a deadline rush.



I think it's enturely possible that tabloids would go to AI headlines

Actually AI doesn't seem able to make witty headlines. I copied Jon Herman's Post column into chatGPT and asked it to write a 2 word headline. Here's what I got:



1 Yankees Crushed

2 Dodgers Triumph

3 Grand Slam



Then I asked it to make a pun:

Yankees slammed in Dodger land!

We've now completed one week's worth of first-round polls, and we have seven covers that will advance to subsequent rounds.



When all is done, the top six covers will receive a second-round bye. (This is assuming that we'll have 26 first-round polls. If the next couple of weeks yield enough covers for one or more additional polls, the number of covers that receive a bye will be reduced.)



Here's how our winners rank so far. All we know for sure at this point is that WHAT A MESS won't get a bye and will have to compete in the second round.

Two week's worth of first-round polls have now completed.



It's still looking like the top six covers will get a second-round bye, although that number may be reduced if the next week produces enough covers.



No covers have clinched a bye yet, but the covers listed in italics have been eliminated from contention for that bye, and will compete in the second round.
