Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted October 15, 2024 Posted October 15, 2024 Severino yes, Lindor no.Huh.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted October 15, 2024 Posted October 15, 2024 I guess Severino must be one of those picks when the voters name him based on past rep and didn't really watch him much this year.I don't recall him making any newsreel highlight plays that might have been seen around the country. But "best fielding pitcher" is one of those things that follow a player around. Some winners keep getting it for years (e.g.- Harvey Haddix, Jim Kaat, Greg Maddux). As for Lindor, a shonda.Later
Fman99 Old-Timey Member Posted October 15, 2024 Posted October 15, 2024 Yeah, sorry, you can't tell me that he's only the fourth best defender in the NL at his position. That's some buh-lone-E
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted October 15, 2024 Posted October 15, 2024 I was hoping to see Iglesias up there for utility. Maybe he got called up too late.Lindor certainly seems like a gold glove candidate to me. He makes every routine play, makes almost all the hard plays, and makes some spectacular ones too. I just don't really know how you gauge his play against all other shortstops. I know I haven't seen any of the finalists to enough to be able to say Lindor is definitively better, but I kinda doubt the ones who decide this have seen enough to say he isn't.In these things, usually the superstar gets the benefit of the doubt.
ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted October 15, 2024 Posted October 15, 2024 Lindor victim of NY bias imho
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted October 15, 2024 Posted October 15, 2024 I thought the bias was east coast ? Has it flipped ?
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted October 15, 2024 Posted October 15, 2024 I don't think we know enough to make conclusions about bias. I do know that the giving of the award based on reputation is something they've long since sought to curtail and have factored the available data in to the process. Rather than merely survey managers, as in the past, a complicated evaluation including managers, coaches, and data rankings provided by SABR (accounting for 25% of the tabulation) is taken into account.I can't speak for what that SABR data includes, but The Fielding Bible ranks Luis Severino among the top defensive run savers in the National League at his position, while Lindor is much lower down among his peers (who are led by Masyn Winn, I think).
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted October 15, 2024 Posted October 15, 2024 I watched this defensive highlight reel from July of this year, as Iglesias and Torrens really emerged as something more than flashes in the pan, but my real takeaway was how much of the Mets best defense was played behind Sean Manaea.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted October 15, 2024 Posted October 15, 2024 Harrison Bader game here with the reputation of being a "gold glove class" defender. He wasn't nominated, so I looked him up in baseball ref-com.He only put up .2 DWAR this year. Even though he wasn't nominated, I'm surprised it wasn't more.Later
Cowtipper Old-Timey Member Posted October 15, 2024 Posted October 15, 2024 Naming Gold Glove finalists is so hokey.
