DocTee Old-Timey Member Posted August 18, 2024 Posted August 18, 2024 Went to this game on a last-minute lark. $21 tickets with access to the Ceasars club that allowed us to dodge the raindrops. fantastic start by Sevy and a really good crowd. Got there too late for the OMG tee shirt that some clown tried to trade to me for an $18 beer. Hard pass.
Cowtipper Old-Timey Member Posted August 19, 2024 Posted August 19, 2024 Catching up on some games. This was brilliant. Even though I knew how it was going to end, when Severino got that last strike, I reacted with the excitement I would have had I watched it live. Severino has given us some headaches, but consider where he was just a year ago. He was 4-8 with a 6.65 ERA in 19 games for the Yankees. This was a guy they pulled off the trash heap, a guy who missed all of 2020 and made 3, 4, 19 and 19 appearances in 2019 and from 2021 to 2023, respectively. Everything he's done for us is a gift and a boon. Sure, he's not pitching like a future Hall of Famer anymore, but he's also been on the mound for more innings than any other Mets pitcher this year. He does seem a little Taijuan Walker-ish, in that he had a great first half and a less impressive second half, but I'll take it.Walker, 2021:1st half—7-3 W-L, 2.66 ERA2nd half—0-8 W-L, 7.13 ERASeverino, 2024:1st half—6-3 W-L, 3.78 ERA2nd half—2-3 W-L, 4.36 ERASo it's not as stark as Walker, but the point remains the same. Nevertheless, this is a signing I'm glad the Mets made.
batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted August 19, 2024 Posted August 19, 2024 I think the Mets have gotten very respectable output from the top of the rotation. By the end of last season, the rotation was a house of cards and pretty much had to have been rebuilt from scratch. There wasn't gonna be any immediate help from the farm. The only starters the Mets had developed over the last few years that stuck in the majors, Peterson and Megill, were inconsistent throughout their careers and thus, unreliable. The Mets thought they'd be in play for Ohtani and Yamamoto but after the team imploded last season and threw in the towel by the trade deadline, it was obvious that they'd blown whatever chances they ever had of acquiring either of those two. And in any event, Ohtani would sustain an injury that would prevent him from pitching for at least all of this season. Not that his talents couldn't be used anyways. He's probably the NL's best hitter this season. The Mets also lost the services of their best pitcher, Senga, for what will likely be this entire season, minus one start. They did a terrific job building a starting rotation given what they had to work with.
Cowtipper Old-Timey Member Posted August 19, 2024 Posted August 19, 2024 Between them, the Severino, Manaea, Quintana and Peterson have the following combined line:30-20 W-L, 472 2/3 IP, 405 K, 3.75 ERA. Solid, very solid.
