Mets got Robinson Cano and Diaz and $20 million. Mariners got Jay Bruce, relievers Anthony Swarzak and Gerson Bautista, and prospects Jarred Kelenic and Justin Dunn.



Dunn hasn't pitched in the majors since 2022, Swarzak since 2021, Bautista since 2019. Kelenic is just OK. Cano obviously sucked.

It was a good "go for it" trade at the time, though it lacked a full commitment with other moves going forward. Covid didn't help. One of the best closers and a hall caliber hitter, even if an older one? Those are two good parts to have.

Under normal circumstances, a million times out of a million, Alonso is held back for the requisite number of weeks and days so as to delay his free agency by a full calendar year. I complained about it at the time suggesting a young Andres Gimenez could the job



In the end the Mets obtained Edwin Diaz. The others were/are inconsequential
